bean 85 #1 Posted September 26, 2011 i am considering removing the clinton engine from my rj 58 and installing a 30 yr old briggs 5hp. it has a built in tank and i won't need the original rj tank. the rj tank is perfect and is spotless inside. what is a tank in this condition worth? I am not auctioning it off, just curious. I may later or trade, for an attatchment when i get the briggs straightened out. thanks
wallfish 18,221 #2 Posted September 26, 2011 I would say around $50 Why would you want to remove the Clinton and put in a Briggs?
bean 85 #3 Posted September 26, 2011 the clinton engine runs well, but it burns a little oil and is seeping oil around the head gasket. it also needs the correct air cleaner. we have a hyperly-sensitive smoke alarm in our garage and it will set it off when we start it. I have a vintage briggs that was on a tiller. it is 30 yrs old. it has 12-15 hrs of run time. it runs great, doesn't leak or burn any oil,and is a little more powerful. my grandsons plan to use the tractor to mow, plow, and work our garden . they wouldn't have the patience for any downtime I'm sure the clinton engine could be easily be put in order, I just am not that familiar with clinton engines and their restoration. thank you for your information. Well, Just keep it with the tractor... Oil seepage could be a result of the head needing torqued. If you warm up the engine and then retorque it to 18ft lbs in a clockwise rotation from the exhaust valve that might fix it. Check out my forum if you want. Do you have any pictures of the tractor/engine? Charlie
KC9KAS 4,744 #6 Posted September 26, 2011 If I were you, I would keep it as original as possible, as it would be worth so much more if you ever wanted to get rid of the whole tractor. I would think that the Clinton could easily be fixed.....This is just my 2 cents worth, and sorry if I offend you, but that is my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions! bean 85 #7 Posted September 27, 2011 no offence taken. I agree with you, it would be better to keep original. I just don't know that much about small engine repair. I can do the basics. the grandkids were pushing each other around the yard in between motors. they are impatient the briggs is in and runs great. the 5hp has a lot of torque and they drive it in 3rd up a small hill at idle speed. working on belt length for the mower now. if I figure out how to post pics, I will today. I have recieved many emails about the parts. I couldn't return all of them. I will try to today. thanks again everyone.
bean 85 #8 Posted September 27, 2011 this is a video of the clinton engine while it was in the tractor. I didn't realize that the choke was in the middle position until after the video stopped. that is why it was idling a little rough.
