grnlark 490 #1 Posted September 21, 2011 My 702 is supposed to have a two prong key ignition switch from what I understand. The PO had a simpe on/off switch in it's place. What I thought was going to be an easy swap has turned into a bit of a chore. I went to Napa and looked thru their book and they only offered one 2 position key switch for lawn and garden applications. It looks good visually so I bought it. Well, it turns out that when I hook it up, the 'off' position is live on both sides. And in the 'on' position, one side is live and one is not - indicative of what I'm thinking should be the off position. Very frustrating. So I went back to Napa and tested another of the same switch - same thing. The guy there thinks that particular key switch might be designed to be grounded... The 702 has one hot lead that comes right off the voltage regulator, enters the switch in one pole, and the second pole goes direct to the coil. I'm thinking the ignition switch should be acting like nothing more than an inline on/off with a key instead of a button. Does anyone know what the right part number is for an original switch? and/or does anyone have an extra ignition switch they are willing to sell? Used is fine. I just want to get this thing back together. Thanks in advance, Matt
Martin 2,133 #2 Posted September 21, 2011 your switch p.n. is 1747. same as my 1054. you are right in that they are a simple on off switch. off position is open and on position is closed.
grnlark 490 #3 Posted September 21, 2011 your switch p.n. is 1747. same as my 1054. you are right in that they are a simple on off switch. off position is open and on position is closed. Exactly what I thought, but that can't be right, because in order to get the key out, the switch would actually be on. Then the battery will drain. There's no way that can be correct. There's no way that can be correct. if that is how it is now then the switch is one for a ground to turn off switch. the 1747 breaks the circuit when its off. my 1054 had a napa type installed when i got it and it was closed circuit when in the off position and broken circuit when in the on. the opposite of how it should be. the switch i replaced it with states its for (IGN) and not (MAG). off is off....... stevebo-(Moderator) 8,541 #9 Posted September 21, 2011 If you find a switch but need a proper 2 prong key I have a few NOS keys....
rydogg 186 #10 Posted September 22, 2011 I use it as an on off switch but it also turns to the start position, it has three prongs on the bottom but I only use two. They look correct and work great since the factory wheel horse ones are usually missing and expensive if you find one, I am going to order a few more for my 753 and 854 and future tractors. If Steve runs out of keys you can also purchase sets of keys only but the switches come with 2 split keys.

rydogg 186 #12 Posted September 22, 2011 Here are some of the keys I have purchased from ebay they are listed as massey parts so if you search for massey key or massey ignition you will find them. The rusty looking key came out of my 856 I just purchased. You can also get the matching ignition, the keys alone are under $10 a pair shipped to your door and the ignitions I have found are around $20 shipped, you can also get the short shaft starter push button (Massey part# 181679M1) for around $10 this has been the cheapest place I have been able to find these parts and they look correct.
