D 18 Auto Deck Problem

Recommended Posts

tookies

I have a 73 D 18 Auto with a 48" deck. As I cut grass with it the deck slows down to where its ineffective at cutting grass. It does this as soon as you run into any thickness of grass. On short grass the blades spin freely.

Could someone advise if they think the problem is located in the PTO (perhaps slipping while under load) or can you adjust the belt tension on the deck itself?

Though not new, the belts appear to be in good shape.

Anyone out there had any experience in this arena?

there is a knob under the left foot rest to adjust belt tension on the belt from the pto to the deck but it might be the belt on the deck that runs the spindles i have a deck that lost the tensioner spring and it did the same thing you are talking about

How likely is it that the PTO is slipping?

I bought the asbestos disc from toro and compared them to the originals.....the originals are not that worn down.......

When the belts start going do they loose traction?

make sure the clutch is engageing 100 % when you flitp the lever it might not be making it tight and also with the tractor OFF engage the pto and stick you hand under the deck and try to turn a blade and see if you can turn it if so see if you can see what all is moving when you turn it if its just that blade its the deck belt if it turns the belt from the deck to the tractor it might be the clutch not adjusted right or belt not adjusted right pm me your phone number if you have other questions and i can talk on the phone to you
