118lfd 8 #1 Posted September 19, 2011 Swapped the motor over from the tractor I got over the weekend. Here are some pics Old motor removed. Great running 10hp magnum Swapping some parts. Some slight mods as I wanted to put the motor mounted gas tank on my 10hp and some of the sheet metal was different. The bolt holes that are tapped in the bottom of the block on my 10hp (so you can bolt the motor down from the bottom) are not drilled on this motor. Some minor frame add ons All Done my new 316-8 I love the power now. It doesn,t even flinch when I engage the mower. The ten would bog and come right back. I can't wait to try the snow blower!!!!!

Martin 2,133 #3 Posted September 19, 2011 looks like youve got plenty of power now i like the bracket mounts for the engine. i think that having the engine hanging over the frame rail looks terrible and thought that if i ever do the 1057 that it will have some frame mods to make the engine frame mount look like it should. my 1054 with the wider frame isnt like that, but ive noticed quite a few of the later ones with the narrower frame are. couldnt understand why built them like that nice looking tractor :banghead:
CRE1992 135 #4 Posted September 19, 2011 I am glad I was able to help you out . It looks great , and I can't wait to see videos of the blower in action this winter. You should talk to Terry about getting some custom 316-8 decals. -Charles

You should talk to Terry about getting some custom 316-8 decals. -Charles I thought about that. I might do that after I paint the hood over. I also have an 8 pinion 8 speed. I am going to swap in cause the 3 series axles look small. I just may wait till it breaks. I want to build a loader for it but we'll see how that goes. I need to figure out a muffler cause I don't like the pepper pot on it now. The ten has a smaller exhaust port so I can't use the muffler that was on it. More projects. CRE1992 135 #7 Posted September 19, 2011 I need to figure out a muffler cause I don't like the pepper pot on it now. I might know where you can find a muffler, let me do a quick search an I'll let you know, you could always add a stack to it... -Charles
CRE1992 135 #8 Posted September 19, 2011 If you go on ebay and type in kohler muffler, and scroll through, there are many different mufflers available for the 16hp. They have some from simplicity, gravely, and cub cadet. Stens online may also have a replacement or new muffler. I think a stack would look cool also, quite a few members have them. Btw, in order to put a loader on your now 316-8 you would have to take the deck off to have it on there, or take the loader off to mow. I am sure people have done both at the same time, but I wouldn't recommend it structurally. Also I would rather use a snow plow or snow blower for snow rather than a loader because the loader you can really only push forward, now if you build a blade for it, its a different story, but when your pushing with a loader the loader arms are pushing against the structural post its connected to, versus directly on the rear axle like the snow plow does. On a wheel horse without a full reinforcement plate you may want to consider adding one to the rear end. I know where you can get one off a 520H. I have moved snow with a JD 790 with a front end loader, and would rather use a plow expect when trying to pile or stack snow. Also if you considering beefing up the rear end, you may want to beef up the front. Look in the classifieds for a 520H forward swept axle, and one inch spindle with all of the parts for the conversion. Or possibly buying another tractor to put the loader on. If interested in a 520H for reasonable money with a 48" deck and 318 hours I know where you can find one. Just a matter of opinions and trying to help you out. Though judging by the quickness in which you broke down the raider 10 and reinstalled the engine on the 310-8, you don't need it. -Charles
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #9 Posted September 19, 2011 There actually was a production 316-8, but they were predominantly an export model and had a P-216 Onan twin. Photo: http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/index.php?showtopic=4685 If you're lucky enough to find any left, 113878 & 113879 are the 316-8 hood side decal part numbers. A muffler for a Magnum-powered 416 will be what you need to find, or just have a new flange made for a 10-14hp muffler. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ @Martin: The large pans hang over the frame on the "regular" tractors because the frame width was initially determined by the width of the smaller engines. It was much simpler to through-drill & tap the two inner holes in the oil pan than redesign the entire tractor to fit an oil pan. The 953 began with a clean sheet of paper (so to speak) so it and the 1054/1054A (and subsequently the GT-14) frame widths were conveniently increased to match the large pan. Is the 16 horse the same size (dimensionally) as the 20 ?

Jrblanke 918 #13 Posted December 4, 2014 (edited) The big motor in the smaller looking wheels/tires makes me think of an SS 396 Camaro, or something like that. Edited December 4, 2014 by Jrblanke

PaulC 342 #15 Posted December 4, 2014 the way that thing thump thump thumps at idle is awesome!!! and I see how when you engaged the mower it did nothing then when you kicked into gear it looked like you were cruising! I have 2 312's with magnums and have thought about this for some time but haven't came across a used 16 magnum or even a 14? I probably shouldn't have saw this thread because now I need to get myself a 16hp magnum thumper!! I did just swap a 12 for a 12 on my 312-a and it was soooo easy. Was putting that 16 in the same just disconnect then reconnect everything? besides adding the motor mounts which is something I could do very easily.
