poosemoop 0 #1 Posted September 16, 2011 How can you tell if an engine came with balance gears. I just purchased a tractor that had an overhaul and after only 10 min of use started knocking. Tore engine down and found rod bolts were loose. Book mentioned balance gears but there are none in the engine. The holes where the stub shafts would have been have freeze out plugs in them. Does this mean that this engine did not come with them?
rmaynard 14,950 #2 Posted September 16, 2011 :thumbs2: The Kohler book has a section on balancing gears, but the two K241's that I have taken apart did not have them. Kohler did not put them in all the K-series engines, and a lot of guys remove them when rebuilding.

Does this mean that this engine did not come with them? Probably not, but the easy to tell with out looking inside is where the dip stick is located. If the dip stick tube goes down through the block it didn't have them. If the dip stick tube is bolted to the side of the block it had them.
rmaynard 14,950 #5 Posted September 19, 2011 Probably not, but the easy to tell with out looking inside is where the dip stick is located. If the dip stick tube goes down through the block it didn't have them. If the dip stick tube is bolted to the side of the block it had them. So what your saying is that none of the K241's had them? The reason I ask is because every K241 I've seen has the dip stick screwed into the top of the block, and the parts list shows balancing gears. :thumbs2:
