14 Horse Kohler Questions

Recommended Posts

71_Bronco

I am in the process of redoing my Bronco 14 (as you all know by now), and I want to do a little preventative maintenance on the motor. Here is a list of stuff I was thinking about doing. I don't want to break it down to the block and rebuild it (it runs strong as it is now). As far as I know, it is the factory motor. I can provide model & serial number tonight if needed.

-Oil Change

-Replace Head Gasket

-Clean Any Carbon While Head Is Off

-Rebuild Carb

-New Air Filter

-Good Cleaning & Fresh Paint

-New Spark Plug

-New Fuel Filter

If anybody has any other advice / things I should do, I am all ears. As I said before, it runs fine, and I just want to keep it going strong before anything catastrophic happens.

Thanks allot!

Oh, and I am going to need part numbers eventually for the carb rebuild kit, head gasket, and spark plug type. I know I can look up the stuff, but if someone has it off-hand, I would be very appreciative.

Thanks!!!

My dad always told me to don't kick a sleeping dog. If it were me I wouldn't touch the head or carb unless it isn't running right. Typical oil change, fuel filter, air filter, sprucing it up is fine. My $.02

i agree with zeig, the but if you do all of the above you should do the valve clearances too,its really not too hard and the carb will be off so acess ia available

Hi,

This is what I do to my wheelhorses when I restore or clean up a wheelhorse:

-Clean carbon of head and piston

-Check valves for good sitting in the valve seat

-New head gasket

-Completely new breather assembly(gaskets, filter, reed valve,...) and while you're doing that check and maybe adjust the valves correctly.

-Rebuild carburetor

-New fuel pump gasket

-New camshaft gasket

-New oil

-New spark plug

For your part numbers go to Kohlerplus.com and type in your serial numbers from the engine. You'll get a list with every part from your engine and the part numbers.

For some parts the part numbers changed over time. You can click on the part number and it will give you the new number. I think the old numbers are colored in orange.

As for your sparkplug you will need a RH10C or H10C Champion.

Hope I could help you a little,

Pieter-Jan :banghead::thumbs2:

P.S.: I also buy me a new airfilter and pre-filter.

Lots of good ideas so far, I'll just add a couple more thoughts.

When you pull the head off, check it for being flat, and make sure you torque the bolts down properly when you put it all back together.

I agree with everybody else who's suggested adjusting the valves and at least cleaning the breather assembly -- neither is hard to do, and both are much easier once the carb is off.

I would also check the points, probably replace them and the condenser as well. There's several methods for adjusting the points/timing (.020", static or timing light), no way to know for sure which method will work best on your particular engine, try 'em all if necessary until you like the way it starts and runs.

You might consider replacing your entire fuel line as well.

Have fun! :thumbs2:

Here is a pic of the motor. from what I have been told / seen, I do not have an oil filter to replace, no points to set, and no fuel pump.

The advice and checking the valves is a good idea, and thanks all for the ideas.

The carb works fine as is, but as far as I can tell, it hasn't seen any attention since new. The throttle works fine, but the choke likes to stick closed sometimes, and I have to manually open it by hand, as the cable for the choke doesn't have enough strength to open it after the motor is running, and no, it's not due to the cable sticking, I already ruled that out.

I figured since I had the motor off the frame already, and on a stand-alone mini-pallet, doing simple work on it would be easy. I understand where you guys are coming from, it it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I think I want to do it for more of a peace-of-mind, rather then needing the work. I just want to do it right the first time and not have to worry about it down the road, and have to pull it out again.

And yes, the exhaust WILL be redone, I know there were comments made about it when I first got the tractor

My bad if I lead you astray, and I get the feeling I should have done some research before I posted anything, but no points and no fuel pump?

What kind of ignition do you have on this machine?

And the fuel line to the carb looks like it's coming from a fuel pump, or am I seeing that wrong?

Wow, call me crazy and tickle me pink, I never noticed the pump until you pointed it out to me. I thought that was part of the carb when I removed the fuel line, and just thought mine was gravity fed since the tank is higher then the carb.

I was told when I first joined here, that I don't have an oil filter, that I have a "splash" type motor, that the oil just splashes around inside and that there is no pump or filter.

As to the points / no points, I was told that since I have that little box that the spark plug wire comes out of, that there is no points, and that I can convert to points if I wanted it. I don't know if that info is true or what that type of ignition is called.

I guess you could say I am still a newbie at all this, and hence why I am askin for help

EDIT: Found another picture of the motor

I will also post the numbers from the motor on here tonight (model & serial) and see if I can find out exact details of the motor.

Okay, you're crazy, but you're going to have to tickle yourself, that's just not the way I roll! :thumbs2:

I just reviewed this whole thread, and I don't think anybody mentioned an oil pump or an oil filter, so just to clarify:

You're correct, you DON'T have an oil pump or an oil filter.

You DO have a fuel pump, and I highly recommend installing a fuel filter if you don't already have one.

As for the ignition system, forget what I said about points and a condenser. I see now that you have a different setup than I'm used to, and I can't tell you anything accurate about yours. Sorry about the confusion, I'll try really hard not to let it happen again. :banghead:

Tunnahead, no worries about it.

The numbers on the motor are as follows:

Serial #: 3121504

Model #: K321S

Spec. #: 60124b

As of right now, I do have a fuel filter on there. Somebody must have put it on when they replaced the fuel line, as there is fuel injected automotive fuel lines on it. And yes, a new fuel filter will be installed.

As to the oil pump / filter, I was told that in a previous thread a while back, not from this specific one.

As always, thanks all for the help!

Anglo Traction

You'll probably find that reference to an Oil Filter on your Tractor is based on the fact that you have a Sunstrand Hydro Transmission and it has an Oil Filter on it.

It look's like your Carb is in a Tidy condition and the PO may have serviced the Engine (De Carbonised the Head etc).

I would take the Head off and check it anyway, if it's ok and clean, you only pay out for a Head Gasket to get peace of mind for another 500 hours use.

Kohler recommend a 'De Carb' of the Head after that running time.

If it needs cleaning check the Valves/Seats as well. It's all in the Manual.

Regards.

I'm not trying to be a harda$$ but one of the first things you need to do is look up technical information and specs on your own, Ilearned as a youngster that it's to easy to make a mistake when you trust your memory or someone else's memory for tech specs and procedures, look up the info, print it out and have it in front of you when you are doing the work. If you don't understand something or need help with problematic proceedures I'll be right there to help you like most other members but don't trust our memories for the basic specs. and info

No insult taken.

I completely agree with you as to looking up the info for myself. The point of this thread was to see what I should do to the motor to "spruce it up". The info and specs just kinda stemmed off it. Now that I am back from vaca, and have the numbers off the motor, I will be able to look up all technical specs that I may need.
