520H blowing fuses and starting problem

Recommended Posts

CRE1992

Im trying to help a friend that has a 520H, it blows the 30 amp and the 20 amp fuses. The started will not turn over when the key is turned to the start position, but if you jump the solenoid it starts...

I believe there maybe a dead short somewhere, any ideas? If so where should I look?

Thanks

Charles

You might want to start with a wiring diagram to help you determine where to look. What year is the tractor?

I would start by cleaning the connections between sections of the wiring.

The 9 pin connection would be where I would start, (weak link in the chain) then the fuse box, the clips that hold the fuses will turn green and get weak giving a bad connection. If the 30 amp fuse had a bad connection it will not turn over.

Check to make sure the ground is still grounding...

Possibly the connection on the key switch as well, may not be as bad as you think.

Electronics cleaner

Electrical grease

Possibly new fuse box & connectors. (parts are available) :thumbs2:

If the 9 pin plugs "look" OK, go over the whole wire harness looking for contact with metal. If that harness was removed or rerouted from the clips, vibration could have worn the insulation off causing a direct short to ground. Had that happen on my 416. Next would be looking at the fuse holder. There are enough stories of these melting away on this site.
