520H Maintenance/Servicing

Recommended Posts

I'm interested in lubricating the PTO Bearing and Wheel bearings. Looked in the Wheel Horse manuals and they do not cover it, been looking through the topics and have found info on repairs/replacement but nothing on greasing them.

Does the PTO Needle Bearing have an hourly servicing requirement and what grease is specified?

I have not removed the wheels since purchasing the tractor but want to just to check things out. The front wheel bearings have zirk fittings but not sure how the rear wheel rotating components are lubed. I've seen references to sealed bearings which are good "for life" (until they fail!) and would like to make sure I'm keeping up with preventative maintenance before something fails.

Thank you all...

The PTO outer bearing is sealed. The needle bearing inside is lubricated from within. If you take the PTO apart and clean all the old grease out, you can put in about a tablespoon of grease. Wheel Horse recommends #2 Lithium based grease for all grease fitting areas. Don't over grease it as the excess will push out through the seal and get on the clutch plate. Service interval for grease fitting areas is 25 hours. I guess that would apply to the PTO as well.

The rear axle is lubricated via the transmission oil.

HELLO P3X, I GREASE MY PTO EVERY 400-500 HOURS. I WIPE THE OLD GREASE OUT OR CLEAN IT WITH KEROSENE. DON'T SUBMERGE THE OUTER IN SOLVENTS IT IS SEALED. THEN PUT SOME GREASE ON YOUR FINGER AND SMEAR IT ON THE NEEDLE BEARINGS. INSTALL AND SPIN BY HAND THEN REMOVE AND CHECK FOR EXCESS OUTSIDE THE SEAL. IT IS VERY EASY TO DO. GOOD LUCK BOWTIE IN COLUMBUS

Thanks for the respones. Have not used the implements driven by the PTO and want to ensure all is in good shape before I do.

Does Toro/Wheel Horse have this type servicing info in a document? I've downloaded all docs I could find applicable to the 520 (and then some..) and have not found any detailed servicing called out. Did find the PTO Brake adjustment steps and adjusted. Now the PTO Pulley spins down after the engine is off.... Guess I'll have to tighten the clearance a wee bit more than .012.

Thanks again.

The only place I've ever seen this addressed is here on RedSquare! :thumbs2:
