71_Bronco 1,072 #1 Posted August 25, 2011 Was surfin the net tonight and a question popped into my head about the air-cleaner on my 14 horse Kohler. What is the logic behind the metal "dish" that completely surrounds the air filter? Is it to keep the rock and stuff from hitting the filter itself? Seems kinda hindering to me, like it only allows it to suck in air from one side, the engine side, which would be hotter air I would think. So what is the point of the "dish"? SousaKerry 503 #5 Posted August 25, 2011 There is also a slight advantage to making the air change direction in extremely dusty situations. If you look at most farm Equipment they have pre filters to make the dust precipitate out before it gets to the filter. can whlvr 994 #6 Posted August 26, 2011 im not positive of this but it looks like you have the smaller cleaner on there,it looks like the one on my 10 hp,my 16 uses the thicker filter and the thicker cover,my 14hp magnums run the bigger filter but maybe the k runs the smaller one Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Would I be better to find a taller filter of the same diameter, lengthen the attachment stud, and use that? I could re-use the "cover", but then it would only cover part of the filter. I could also get one of those foam sleeves that act as a "pre-filter" to keep the big stuff out. Any benefit to this? I need to buy a new filter anyways, from what I can see, it looked like the original filter on it, a Kohler filter that was caked with dust, dirt, grime etc. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

It is a generic part fitted to 10/12 & 14Hp Tractor Kohlers. they all use the same part numbers for the Filter, Cover & Backplate, at least they are on 70s models. I doubt if you would gain any advantage by enlarging the Filter area. A good clean of the inside of the Cover where the Filter is sandwiched between it and the Backplate, then a new Filter (25-883-03-S1) will see it fine. It would probably need a re-tune of the Carb after, due to more air passing through the new 'less restrictive' Filter as it may run Lean ( assuming it had beed adjusted in the past to run with the clogged filter). shorts 182 #9 Posted August 26, 2011 the metal "hat" is there to protect the filter element from the weather and large foriegn object damage, the spec number on the engine determines what air filter was installed at the factory just like the other options such as crank PTO configuration, oilpan, charging system, starter, etc. I have an early 70's vintage K301 on a TORO commercial mower that came with the old style oilbath ail filter, probably a better filter than the paper ones but they are obsolete because they cant sell any filter elements or as many engine parts due to dirt infiltration.
