Looks like a great show. I have some memories of Sycamore - I was an Army recruiter stationed at Dekalb, living in Malta. I had the Sycamore area as one of my recruiting areas. I'm sure I wouldn't recognize the Dekalb/Sycarmore area today as that was back in 1983-84.

Thanks for looking guys. :thumbs2: Terry, the downtown area has not changed a bit, but as you would expect, it has the urban sprawl happening. Not too bad though. That show is always a great show, and the smell of coal in the air is always something us old timers have fond memories of. I remember shoveling coal into the stoker when I was young. :banghead:

Brrly, the vacation was great. Even when you are retired, it is still good to get away. :banghead:

Steve,

I'm getting a little off topic here, but I "sniped" in Elgin a couple of times - it had it's own recruiting station but I recruited some recruits out of the Elgin area. My area included Sycamore, Kirkland, Kingston, Genoa, Kaneville, Maple Park, etc. The other recruiter in our office had Dekalb, Sandwich, Shabbona, Waterman, and a couple of other areas I can't remember now. I used to spend a lot of "windshield time" traveling across that section of Illinois, drove a lot through St. Charles, Aurora, Joliet, etc. Our MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station) was downtown Chicago on 8th and Michigan. Drove a lot to the MEPS, and in fact for about a year, as I lived in Malta, I worked at the MEPS driving the East-West tollway from Malta to Chicago, getting on the Eishenhower, the Loop, etc. to get to 8th and Michigan. I got well acquainted with Chicago driving.

Great stuff Terry...I remember the MEPS center. I went through that place when I joined the Navy in 1970. If I ever get to meet you, I have some great stories about that day. :banghead: You may not recognize all the tollways anymore...6 to 8 lanes now, and you better know where you are going. Throws me sometimes, and I am usually pulling a trailer going to shows...not my favorite part of the journey. :thumbs2:
