Valve Guide Removal

Recommended Posts

MaineDad

Guys:

I need to remove the valve guides to replace them. The hood is off, the carb and breather assembly have been removed and the valves and springs, keepers, and holders are out. Now how do I get those buggers out of there? They look too big to be able to drive them out from the top.

Any ideas would be appreciated...

Go to page 2.2 of the Kohler Service Manual, and you will see this picture. It's all the special tools that you will need to do a complete rebuild. Included is a slide hammer for removal of valve guides.

I've never done one on a big block Kohler, but I have done several on the small block engines.

I made up an adaptor for a slide hammer and had at it like the Kohler manual tells you and never got them to move. So I made up a plate so I could try and draw them up and out using a long bolt as a puller, and again they wouldnt move.

I ended up driving them down into the tappet area of the block. BUT the valve guide is longer than the height of that tappet recess, so I knocked them down about 1/2 an inch, and gave the protruding bit on the bottom a smack with a punch to break off the lower part. Then drove the rest of it out. They're cast iron so they should break reasonably easily.

As I said, I havent done a big engine, but I suspect the same procedure would work.

I just posted on your 301 thread, but the real answer is take it to a machine shop that knows better than to try to do a valve job on something with worn out guides.
