MaineDad 87 #1 Posted August 19, 2011 Guys: I need to remove the valve guides to replace them. The hood is off, the carb and breather assembly have been removed and the valves and springs, keepers, and holders are out. Now how do I get those buggers out of there? sorekiwi 761 #3 Posted August 20, 2011 I've never done one on a big block Kohler, but I have done several on the small block engines. I made up an adaptor for a slide hammer and had at it like the Kohler manual tells you and never got them to move. So I made up a plate so I could try and draw them up and out using a long bolt as a puller, and again they wouldnt move. I ended up driving them down into the tappet area of the block. BUT the valve guide is longer than the height of that tappet recess, so I knocked them down about 1/2 an inch, and gave the protruding bit on the bottom a smack with a punch to break off the lower part. Then drove the rest of it out. They're cast iron so they should break reasonably easily. As I said, I havent done a big engine, but I suspect the same procedure would work.
