Something wrong with engine oil reading

Recommended Posts

Wheel Horse Kid

Okay, here is the problem: I have a K301S Kohler engine that I changed the oil in the other day. The K301S takes 2 quarts of oil. After putting in the fresh 2 quarts, I checked to see what the dip stick read and it was BELOW the add mark.( I did let the oil drain in the motor before checking)

Does anybody know what the problem is?

Thanks!

1986 and newer has a low oil switch and the capacity was changed to 2-1/2 quarts.

Kid,

Garry's response probably explains most of what you're observing, maybe all of it.

There's another thread here that discusses this topic in more depth. It's a long one, you can cut to the chase by starting with Garry's post on 4/27/11, about 3/4 of the way down the first page:

It's also possible you have the wrong dipstick, that's discussed in there also.

Do you happen to know if your engine was the original one on this tractor (I assume this is your 312-8 we're talking about)?

One final thing -- after you changed the oil, did you run the engine for a few minutes to let it circulate, then let it settle down again for a few more minutes before you checked the level?
