I'm beginning the resto process on my newly acquired snow blower. Quack question. Is this thing powder coated? If so. Can I paint over powder coating?

I don't know if it is powder coated but you can paint over powder. Just make sure you prep it and it has some "tooth"

I know some people have posted about certain paints, or paints and primers that were not compatible so hopefully you don't run into any of that.

Hopefully Kelly sees this. He does autobody and might have some more specific tips.

Good luck with it and I hope you post lots of pics. Maybe it will inspire me to do mine.

What paint and primer would you suggest? I want IH red. And I want the finish to last.

Sorry it took a wile to get back to you, just been busy. As far as paint goes I would recomend someting catilized (uses a hardner). Just because those are the types of paint I have used over PC and never had a problem. Plus they will tend to be very durable too. Others paints may work too. Just to make sure the paint you get will work, do a test panel. Mix alittle paint and spray the inside of 1 part and let it dry. That way if there is a problem it will be confined to the under side of one part insted of the intire project. Let me know how you make out and if you have any other ??? post em up.

I started tearing it apart today. Does anyone have a preferred method for getting the drive gear off the back side of the impeller? It's currently soaking in rust penetrant.

Also has anyone made an idler to replace the plastic chain tension block?

Moments before disassembly. This unit was left to rot for at least two years. Road salt certainly left its mark all over the interior. The chute rotating work gear is so badly rusted I'll have to replace it. The entire unit is still in good usable shape. Nothing the sand blaster can't cleanup.

How did the Dewalt impact do disassembling the blower?

That is my favorite and most used tool.

I have the 1/2" one too but the size and power of the 1/4" is great.

Its easier than spinning every bolt. It works well. But no comparison to air tools.

Has anyone ever taken apart the peerless right angle transmission? Or had a need to change the fluid? Change seals? etc......

Not yet but I did notice some fluid on the floor when I moved mine a couple months ago.

I wasn't too excited so I didn't look into it so much.

I hope it's nothing major and I just blew a seal.

Kevin, that thing looks Sweet I think next year Im gonna do mine? Presently it looks pretty good, but I think she could use a Deep Down do it right paint job and new decals. These things are too exspensive not to take care of.

I paid $200 for the unit. I'm happy with the quality of the work. But dam costs ran away! I'm confident once winter hits my back will appreciate theses efforts.

I checked out your videos concerning the rubber on your impeller. Where did you get the rubber? Truck sidewall?? Do you feel it has made a significant difference?

Its almost done! I need a few more bolts and a chain tool. Then I need to fab a lift rod. The PO loaned me the rod from his other blower to copy. Hopefully it'll be complete by the end of the week.

Where do you find this "Impeller Kit" for these snow blowers? I didn't see a link.

You can buy a impeller kit for walk behind two-stage blowers through numerous websites. It is basically a piece of rubber, a backer plate and the nuts and bolts. You drill a hole through the fans on the impeller, bolt on the rubbers to seal up the gaps and allow the snow to be thrown further.

It is commonly called a Clarence kit for Clarence Bibeau who first marketed the product. It is about $35 and is one size fits all. It would be easy enough to make your own to fit whatever you want.

Search "impeller kit" "snowblower impeller kit" with google or youtube to see them in action.

its a very simple kit to make yourself. or just buy the kit and install. can make a huge difference on some impellers and marginal on others. the whole point of the rubber is to reduce the gap between impeller blade and the blower housing. if the blades have a large gap then installing it will definitely help. really makes that impeller throw the snow up into the chute better.

like i said works good on some and marginal on others, really depends how big the gap is to begin with.....

Thanks guys! As far as that impeller kit goes I think I'll keep my money and buy more beer. Good for who ever came up with $3 worth of material and made an awesome profit!
