1988 414-8

on a 1988 414-8 are there any issues to look for?.

did they have any problems.

i just got one.

i'll post pics in the morning.

headlights don't work and test lights? on the dash blink once in a while.

everything else seems good.

The lights on my 1987 414-8 do the same thing, I think the most problamatic thing about thing about them that I have heard is the circuit board. Do you have to jump hte solenoid to start yours because I have to, to start mine. The only light that comes on when the test switch is flipped sometimes is the parking brake but only when it is engaged... so I have no idea.

HELLO, I FOUND ON A 312-8 THE PROBLEM WAS THE CONNECTOR THE CIRCUIT BOARD PLUGS INTO. IT HAS 6-8 PINS. REMOVED THE BOARD AND CLEAN IT WITH WINDEX OR SOAPY WATER AND BLOWN DRY. CHECK FOR CORROSION ON BOARD AND PIGTAIL. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOD GROUND. THAT IS WHERE I WOULD START. GOOD LUCK

the test light wiring looks better than i've seen on some.

i'll mess with it and see if i can get at least the headlights working.

it runs great,deck is quiet and clean,brakes are good. it just needs a little bit of tlc to get everything right.

oh and that big ugly shift knob is going too lol.

thats a nice 414,seat is real nice too,the headlights shoulnt be too hard to fix,the circuit board is another story,i have no idea why they put these on ,i had one start on fire and the other one doesnt work,but other that that the 414 is a great strong machine

Looks like you got a good one, really clean, and that engine looks like it's brand new!

In addition to the circuit board issues that others have already mentioned, the only extra "feature" you might want to look at is in the steering system. I believe this applies to all the 300 and 400 series tractors, but I'm no expert.

The upper steering shaft goes through an opening in the console (not sure that's the correct term). The metal in that area is thinner than in previous era Wheel Horses, so it tends to wear out more quickly and also wear out the bushing that supports the shaft there. If your steering is really sloppy, and you can't tighten it up using the "standard" procedures described elsewhere in this forum, that would be another place to look for problems.

Greater minds than mine have come up with some creative fixes for this problem, the best solution seems to depend on whether you can remove the steering wheel, here's one place to get some ideas:

Other than that, the 414 is a good strong machine, will easily handle a 48" mower, and pretty much any other attachment you might want to throw at it.

ya it seems like it's in great shape so far.

the steering is tight with no slop. i do think there is 1 bent spindle though.

once i figure out what different spindles fit the 414 i plan on fixing that.

i'm trying to find a good snowblower for it.

a great tractor. It has the k321 eng. I run a 48" side discharge

deck and it handles it with ease' I took the circuit board out and added

my own led lighys in the light holes. Did a little creative wiring and

put a red light for the low oil senser, and green lights to tell you

ignition is on, light switch on etc.

Oooh! GREAT idea! I've removed the circuit boards from both my 312's because they were such a PITA to get going right. I like your idea. What did you use for LED's (mfg. and part number)? I can figure the wiring out pretty easy.
