Larryworks 0 #1 Posted August 9, 2011 My drive belt that connects the drive shaft to the hydrostatic fan is smoking real bad and I need to remove it. There seems to be a lot of things in the way and I don't want to have to remove things I really don't have to. I can't seem to find a manual that shows it, let alone how to remove it. Kingwood990 16 #5 Posted August 9, 2011 Here is online copy of the owners manual. https://lookup3.toro.com/classes/doGetPub/?pubid=8243 This is the manual to the transaxle. It should show how to remove the cooling fan on the top of the transaxle. https://lookup3.toro.com/classes/doGetPub/?pubid=6892 The 244-H is a very nice machine for what it is. I also have a 1991 244-H. I love mowing with it.

Kingwood990 16 #9 Posted August 10, 2011 It was a white page for me too. I have an owners manual and it does not show how to take a belt off. I will pull the deck on mine tomorrow and I will take pictures of how the belt is routed and if there is enough slack in the belt when the parking brake is set. I do apologize about the links. I just tried them again and they did nothing for me. :woohoo:
oldredrider 2,553 #10 Posted August 10, 2011 About a month or two ago, I replaced a drive belt on a 244H. The job looks intimidating, but it is fairly simple. If I remember correctly, I had to remove the belt tension assembly (1 bolt) and for some reason, one of the tie rods. I'm pretty sure it was the right side. It's not a big deal at all once you get in to it. Probably took about 45 mins. to do. You also want to find out why it was smoking, and correct that problem while you're under there! There is a spring for tension that you want to inspect for condition, which could be weak, thus the smoke. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. Kingwood990 16 #11 Posted August 10, 2011 So I pulled the deck off of the 244-H and I noticed that this idler pulley has a grove for the bolt. I believe that you can loosen this bolt and that will let the pulley slide back and forth. I do think that this would give the belt enough slack to be removed. I would follow oldredriders suggestions as well.
Larryworks 0 #12 Posted August 10, 2011 Thank you all for your suggestions and effort. I will give it a try and see what happens. I will be out of town the rest of this week so it will be early next week before I can even continue. Thanks again. Larry
