New Horse ???

Hi Guys,

Saw an add in my local paper. Said, Wheel Horse, 16hp. Kolar (?) :WRS: , 48 in. cut. So I called the guy. He didnt know what model it is. Says it is about 20 or more years old, has 3 speeds forward, and reverse, plus low range, making it 6 speed, and 2 reverse. 16hp. kolar, starts good, runs good, cuts good, looks good. He wants $500.00  . What do you guys think. Is it worth going to look at ? About 20 miles away....... Thanks for your input.

Get moving man!!!! Thats a C-160 or a C-165 or a 416-8. Whichever it is it sounds like a good deal.

I tend to agree with Mike. At least it's worth the drive over for a look see. And we want pictures.

And btw, it could be 16 hp, 8 speed (the famous no-name Wheel Horses of the 70's) or a 78 or 79 C-161. See I'm learning.

Well I went to look at the tractor this morning. RUF, RUF, RUUUUUUF..... It has been repainted (several times), with a brush :dunno: . There are no numbers on it anywhere, except the hood says 314-8, but he says that it has a 16hp. engine. He said that the motor had been swapped 6 years ago. There were loose wires hanging all over the place. He didnt know where they were supposed to go. The headlights were gone. He said he took them out so he could put on a bigger air cleaner on the engine  . Could not get the transmission dip stick out for the rust :D . He had chains on the rear tires, because there was no tread on them. It did start right up, but blew smoke pretty bad that did clear up after a while. Had to keep the choke out a little to keep it running. The engine had been painted black (with a brush), and there were no numbers or ID of any kind on it.

He kept telling me that the engine was worth $1,600.00 alone, and that his asking price of $ 500.00 was a bargain :WRS: . Me not knowing a whole lot about mechanics, I made him an offer of $ 250.00. Needless to say, I left without the tractor.

It did start and run, and it did cut grass with the 48 inch deck that was beat up. I guess I am spoiled how a tractor should look because of the good shape my little B211-3 is in :D, and the great looking tractors I see here at Red Square . My neighbor is looking for a good used 11hp Briggs to put on my little tractor, while the grass keeps getting taller and taller :D .

Anyway, thanks for reading my rant, and have a nice day..............

There are better deals out there.....believe me!

There are people like that.....thinking their equipment

is worth so much more than it's real value.

I got lucky on my last deal. I was a sucker for buying

a tractor that did not run or mow and paid $500!

But I did a little tweeking and tractor and deck are

running. But common sense should have told me

to walk away from it.

You did good!

 Sounds like a good one to pass on, if you can't get it cheap.

There's more out there.

Hmm a questionable K341 is worth $1600?

Mike do me a favor & ask the guy if he'd like to buy some for that price.

I will even deliver them!

He must not watch ebay or here's all the stories about how high stuff goes on there. :WRS:

Sounds like it will be there a while....bet it will get cheaper. :D

i got my C 165 w/48 inch deck in awesome shape from the original family(father to son, but son never used cause he has less the a quarter of an acre) with 1400 hours :D but i think it was rebuilt so prolly less for 250 and a push mower that i got for free(he original had it listed for 600) and it was about 35 miles from me but i jumped on it and that was probably the best tractor i have ever gotten :WRS:

Mike,

You did good to walked away. $500 was way too much for that type of condition. There are better deals out there so just keep looking.

I agree with terry and the rest, :D the allure of another horse in the stable is allways nice but if things have been all canabalized and swapped around then it sometimes is just not worth it.

Sometimes brushed on paint is good :D there are many round hoods that I have got that I wished they did a brush job from preventing them from rusting!! that would be the only time I would condone it! :WRS:
