71_Bronco 1,072 #1 Posted July 29, 2011 I am in the process of tearing down my 71 Bronco 14, and I want to pull the motor next. It is the cast iron kohler 14 horse motor. How much does the sucker weigh? Can 2 guys lift and carry it? I have access to an automotive engine hoist that I was thinking about using. Also, it looks like the motor is flat on the bottom. Can anybody confirm? I would like to put it on a little dolley so I can roll it around with ease. Thanks
Shuboxlover 479 #2 Posted July 29, 2011 It's not stupid heavy...but it's no light weight....I've picked up a 16hp single kohler, and a 20 hp onan, while I wouldn't want to carry them down to my mailbox, they are light enough to get them out of your tractor and on a dolly of some sort by yourself. Sometimes it's easier to do it by yourself as sometimes another guy can just get in the way. Good luck :woohoo:
WH nut 553 #3 Posted July 29, 2011 Its only about 80-90 pounds, nothing you cant handle
71_Bronco 1,072 #4 Posted July 29, 2011 Thanks guys, I didn't think it was gonna be too heavy, but just wanted to ask. It looks big and bulky, and a little intimidating to be honest lol. I would love to pull it tonight, but I have to pack for a weekend trip to Vermont to see family. Looks like it will have to happen after work sometime during next week. Wow I had to hoist my 16 horse briggs twin cause I just couldn't get it up off the frame myself. Now I could carry it once it was out well from bench to engine stand. I have a kholer 16 on the floor and I can pick that up but not a twin. And yes many times I had an extra hand around and it seamed to be more of a hindrance than help
312Hydro 474 #6 Posted July 29, 2011 Use the engine hoist.Might as well work safe for you and the engine since it's available.Years from now you'll be glad you did.Get it up on a table where you can work on it.
71_Bronco 1,072 #7 Posted July 29, 2011 Another thing I just thought of is a come-along. The garage that it's in has 10' ceilings, and exposed 2x10 rafters. I might be able to just lift it straight up, move the tractor (still a rolling chassis at this point), lower it onto a cart, and go from there.

That would work just keep the hoist close to the supports.
shorts 182 #9 Posted July 29, 2011 It's not so much the weight as it is hard to get a good hold of, either use a hoist/lift of some sort or build up a cart so you can slide it sideways off of the frame and away from the tractor before you try to lift it. as a youngster I used to fall for the big and strong line of bs and just used brute force when i could, now I use every work saving device I can and only resort to brute force when absolutely necessary work smarter not harder :D
305 380 #10 Posted July 29, 2011 i'd use the engine hoist and not a come-a-long. i'm not a big fan of them , i've seen too much stuff ruined and fingers pinched with them to ever trust one
Anglo Traction 761 #11 Posted July 29, 2011 It is the cast iron kohler 14 horse motor. How much does the sucker weigh? Can 2 guys lift and carry it? I have access to an automotive engine hoist that I was thinking about using. Also, it looks like the motor is flat on the bottom. Can anybody confirm? The K301/321s is about 120lbs all up, if I remember the spec in the Manual correctly. The Engine that was originally fitted to the Bronco 14 had a Flat oil Pan. No problem for 2 people to lift, but would be best to lift it while strapped to a Steel Scaffold Pole so you don't fall over eachother. I had to sort my 12hp out on my own and I'm not strong enough, so I dismantled it down to it's basic Block while still on the Tractor. I found removing the Flywheel much easier while the engine was still bolted to the frame. I could then lift it with no trouble onto the Bench.
71_Bronco 1,072 #12 Posted July 29, 2011 HOLY F**K!! That sucker was heavier then I thought it would be. I ended up grabbing a small pallet from work to mount it on while it is out of the tractor. 120 pounds sounds a bit more realistic. I disconnected everything, unbolted it, and waited for my dad to get home. When he got home, we just had one of us on each side, lift straight up, side-stepped, and went straight down. Now that it is on the pallet, it will be a little easier to move as we now have good hand-holds.
WH nut 553 #13 Posted July 31, 2011 I guess Im just used to moving heavy stuff around the shop, Now a twin I would have to put my beer down and use 2 hands
littleredrider 409 #14 Posted July 31, 2011 I never picked one of those but thought the Onan 20 horse was lite for what it was. I think the 10 horse diesel is heavier...

Id have to agree, I didn't think that 20hp onan I got off you was all that heavy , Ive been bouncing it around quite bit, if you guys want to lift something heavy I invite you to lift the big ole 60" deck by yourself. I lifted it by myself onto two saw horses, I think I sat down for about 5 minutes after that! No one was around to help me and I wanted to get stuff done. Must be my youthfulness lol .
