53' Pond Walkbehind

Recommended Posts

Traded a Swisher walkbehind mower for it and think I got a pretty good deal.

I was told it is all original down to the Clinton Engine. The blade is a little cheesy, but PO thought it would help it sale. I believe my 702 restoration may have to wait until I finish this one.

If anyone has any information on how to tell exactly what year it is, I would be appreciative. The PO told me it was a 53'

It looks like my original 54....even has the clinton engine like yours. I was told the 54 is the first year of the idler pulley belt engadgment instead of the engine sliding like the years prior. The only main difference is yours has the 12" wheels and mine has the 16" wheels.

I'd say its either 54-55. I notice the handle bars can be removed from the main frame by (should be four bolts). Yes they say 54 was the first year for the idler pulley engagement BUT I have to disagree.

I have what believe a 1953 walker with round handle bars and the are part of the main frame ( meaning that the handle bars and frame are one not detachable) it also has the idler pulley engagement not the sliding engine engagement like the early models. I have also dated the briggs model 6 and it dated june of 53. (engine is original) I also have a original news paper ad showing the idler pulley engagement walker and it says NEW FOR 53'. I believe that some time in 53 is when the idler pully system started. I also think that in 54 they went to the handle bars being separate frome the frame for ease of shipping.

In 55 or 56 the handle bars changed to a tubular style not the flat stock or soild round stock.

so I think your is a 54 or 55. VERY NICE FIND Weclome to the walker club!!
