i dont own a 416 onan but have a couple 414-8,s with the kohler magnums and the 400 series is a very nice tractor, you will get varied opinions on the onan,if its in good shape they are great motors, just keep her clean of debris because they need the air flow,it will have an eaton 1100 hyrdo trans which is a very stout and reliable tranny, just keep the fluid and filter clean and use the proper hydro filter,if its in good shape i think you will be very happy with it.

The Onan P216 doesn't have the valve train issues that the P220 has. Not to say that you shouldn't maintain it properly, just saying they don't have a valve seat problem.

The Onan is a little thirsty but they make good horsepower.

I love my 416-H.

Hi, good luck you may be one of the lucky ones you may not. See my thread under Onan engines. I had a beautiful little 416H. I have had three Wheel Horse tractors. There are comments in this thread you need to be aware of.

Hi again. In addition to the comments in this forum you can Google Onan Valve Guides and there is lots of information on the net. I do not agree the P216 is free of this problem. It happened to me and I babied this tractor but I did mow 1.6 acres.

It is a great little unit in terms of power and noise level. The Hydo is great. The sweetest sound I ever heard was my onan at work or at an idle when it was cold but it still failed at 455 hours. :woohoo:

My 88 418-H had about 1300 hours on it when the Onan went :woohoo: . I've talked to several small engine dealers and their life span seems to be somewhere between 1200-1400 hours depending on life/usage/etc (I'm sure there are exceptions both directions) a new motor is expensive, the motors can cost more than you'll pay for even a nice used 520. They are a good, strong running engine but they are difficult to rebuild and often cannot be rebuilt. The entire short block is the same on the 18HP and 20HP Onan, there is only a minor difference I think in the cam on the 16hp models. They use a different carburetor to achieve most of the HP difference. I see a lot of 520/518/516 Onans with 900-1100 hours for sale on ebay/craigslist because people know the engine doesn't have much life left. The tractors are as a good as any other wheel horse, however the single cylinder Kohlers are generally more reliable and easier to repair.

I guess I should have phrased it differently. Loose valve seats are FAR less common on the P216 and P218.

I have had two 416H and have one now (1993). It is a great tractor. Plenty of power with 42 inch single stage blower or 48" blade.
