BPjunk 184 #1 Posted July 26, 2011 A local tractor puller came to my house sunday afternoon for me to work on a 6 speed for him. After getting the problem straightend out and I went to install the axles with differential it was found to me that this differential unit could not be the original. The puller picked up a early ten pinion six speed that had no differential, he had told me that the differential was broken and long gone. The differential with axles he brought to me house was the 8 pinion type. The difference between the 10 pinion and 8 pinion is dimensions the carrier bearing support (the area that rides in the transmission housing bearing), the early 10 pinion takes a smaller diameter bearing then the 8 pinion does ..... about 1/8th of a inch smaller. Not wanting to give up on this project the idea to cut the carrier housing down on a lathe to fit the older bearing .... I will let ya'll know how this turns out. Always keep in mind Wheel Horse built several different transmission housings over the years and not all is interchangable. Wild Bill in Richmond, Va. stevasaurus 23,293 #2 Posted July 26, 2011 Bill, I have to echo what you are saying. I and a couple of others have spent about a year researching numbers of gears, etc. and what works where and may be interchangeable. While there seems to be a fair amount that works like that, I am finding there is much more to it. Just talking about your basic 3 speed uni-drives can make you crazy. Six transmissions 5007, 5025,5046,5048, 5059, and 5053 all covered under Section II in the transmission manual. They are the same basic transmission, but each one is different, but just try to find out how they are different with out having that trans to go into. Even when you pull up the trans manuals of the tractors with these same/different transmissions...it is hard to figure out what makes this one different from the next. I know...I am on a mission, but I will get there. Bill...if you have any insight on this...I am more then willing to listen. By the way...no money in it...just want to help people. :D
BPjunk 184 #3 Posted July 26, 2011 Steve, Some of the parts installed in different transmissions are "updated" and this makes them a different model Uni-Drive. I.E. the 1965 Lawn Ranger uses the Uni-Drive model 5048 and the difference between the 5048 and a 5053 is the axle bearings, the 5048 uses a bronze bearing and the 5053 uses a needle type bearing. By looking at the picture in the manual it sure looks like a needle bearing BUT read the part number .... ref 3 is 5571 Bearing Bronze 1" ID. Keep in mind that the same manual picture were used in many manuals. Some time a little experience helps in understanding. Wild Bill in Richmond, Va.

The original differential was is many more pieces then it should have been. I had a 6 pinion but the bearings in the case were to small to put that diff in. So I chucked up the diff halfs in the lathe and turned them down to fit the original bearings. worked great and haven't had any problems with it.

Right on Bill...I am that far in my research...it is almost like you have to tear apart the transmission (which I like to do) to figure out the modification that makes it a little different. That is why I like the members to take lots of pictures when they tear one apart. I know that I will never get to tear down on of each. Thanks Bill
