Horse in the heat

Recommended Posts

IthacaJeff

Hi all;

I'd really like to mow tomorrow, but the prediction is for 97 deg even when I get off

from work at 5 pm. Will mowing in this heat strain the cooling capacity of my 416-8

(16 hp Kohler)? And for those with hydros, any affects there?

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Jeff in Enfield NY

I would make sure both the tranny and motor cooling fins are clear of any dirt, grime, clippings, leaves...etc that would impair air flow. Run the engine at full throttle for max air flow and your good. Of course make sure the fluids are right up to the full mark.

Mike............

PS....some cold beer in the fridge is a good idea as well :woohoo:

I've been pushing dirt for the last few days, and its broke a 100 each day. Seems like I get hot before the little 857 does.

A little preventive maintenance beforehand can save you trouble.

1. Be sure to have plenty of cold beer on hand.

2. Be sure that the cooling fins and all of the engine tins are free from dirt, grass and debris.

3. Be sure to have plenty of cold beer on hand.

4. Make sure that the engine oil is full and of the correct type for hot weather.

5. Be sure to have plenty of cold beer on hand.

6. Raise the blades so that you are not cutting too short. This will eliminate strain on the engine.

7. Be sure to have plenty of cold beer on hand.

8. Dress appropriately. Wear a hat, and use sunscreen.

9. Be sure to have plenty of cold beer on hand.

And did I mention to have cold beer on hand? :woohoo:

:ROTF:

Edit: Sparky, you and I think alike. :D

If I drank a beer between each one of those checks, the lawn would not get mowed. But then again, I'd be in no shape to care. :woohoo:

If I drank a beer between each one of those checks...the lawn would get mowed twice and I would have to drive it down the road 3 blocks to the store, because I would be out of beer. :woohoo::D:ROTF: :D

Jeff,

Thanks for asking this question. We're supposed to hit a humid 98/100/98 tomorrow through Saturday, and I should be mowing my lawn as well (no grass growth recently with the lack of rain, but plenty of ugly-looking weeds).

I had just about decided to say the heck with it (yeah, that's how I always talk :woohoo: ), but some of you guys may have just inspired me to go ahead and mow! :D

And Steve, congratulations on #3000! Here's to another 3 grand!

Well, it seem the only thing I'm missing from the list is a lot of cold beer on hand.

I'm forever amazed by the sage advice from the WH gurus! :woohoo:

Sparky is right on with his advice (except the beer - I don't drink).

Hot weather in Missouri this time of year is to be expected. The truth is that you will be more effected by the heat than your machine (as long as the proper preventative maintenance was performed). If you're concerned about it too much (and this will help you handle the heat also), wait until evening time when the sun is going down or mow in the early morning. Avoiding the hottest part of the day is always good advice (again, you will be more effected by the heat than your machine will).

Your advice is spot on and it appears the Homers have answered.

I guess I'll be the 2nd wet blanket here and ask folks to put aside the sophomoric attitude of "pour beer on everything" and stop and think about two issues.

First and most important, some of us need to be better influences for the younger members cruising this site. Alcohol and machinery do not mix and promoting it in the presence of minors is flat out irresponsible. . In some states, you can be charged with DUI while driving ANY MOTORIZED VEHICLE, including a garden tractor. Most of the "beer heads" out there will piss their pants and start crying like babies if they ever saw red lights flashing behind them while driving home drunk.

Second, the word "diuretic" - if you don't know what it is. look it up. Speak from a platform of education.

My advice for cutting your lawn in 100 degree heat - Don't - wait a day or two and do it on Saturday when the temps will be in the 80's.

I think Mike (sparky) was saying to have cold beer in the fridge for after. I don't think he was suggesting getting sloshed in the heat while working and running the tractor. But I could be wrong, that is just how I read it initially.

Chuck;

No need to feel like a wet blanket. You are absolutely right about mixing alcohol and

hot weather, and operating machinery. Sometimes we can get carried away in this

friendly forum for the sake of humor, but then, some topics are a bit more serious.

Now, no one directly answered the questions about hydros. Are they impacted by

hot weather?

Come on guys. No one suggested drinking the beer, only having it on hand.

A little tongue-in-cheek humor gets taken the wrong way again.

My lawn seems to have gone into a slight hibernation from all the heat and I haven't mowed in a couple weeks and could probably go a couple more if it continues. I'm just going to wait it out in the cool.
