stevasaurus 23,293 #1 Posted July 19, 2011 My splicing partner from phone company days calls me Sunday and says here Craftsman riding mower died and asks me if I want to sell her one of my horses. I am not ready to part with any of them yet, but I remembered one being for sale up the road from me. I went up to talk to the guy and we picked it up yesterday. Now to get her to join Red Square. It starts and runs great, but it is bogging down and dying once it gets hot. I'm thinking coil at this point. Here are some pictures...1978 C-121...looks to be original. JimD 3,347 #2 Posted July 19, 2011 Well, for starters, swap one of your coils to her tractor and see if that's the problem. If not, start checking bearings in the deck and mule drive to see if they are slowing the engine down and stalling it out. Does it start back up when you disengage the deck? Get your tool belt on and help the lady out. :woohoo:
tunahead72 2,551 #3 Posted July 19, 2011 Steve, While you're at it, you might want to take a look at the lift mechanism. Your "partner" is driving around with the lever raised, but the mower deck itself seems to be riding awfully low to the ground from my house. What's it look like when she lowers the lever? Does the engine bog/die when she engages the mower, or just on its own as soon as it gets hot? Have fun!

JimD 3,347 #11 Posted July 25, 2011 My guess is you're gonna find a spider in the gas line or the petcock. :woohoo:
stevasaurus 23,293 #12 Posted July 25, 2011 Chuck this out... Dammit Jim...you were right. You guys will never guess what was wrong with the C-121. I started by draining the old gas out and I noticed only a trickle of gas coming out with the petcock wide open. Pulled off the seat and fender pan and then the tank. Took out the pet cock and found one of those white spiders wedged in the hole. Put it all back together, checked the filter, adjusted the carb and cleaned and gaped the spark plug. Runs like a top and now we have two very happy campers. That horse is going to last her a long time. I was lucky to find the problem...just started from square one. Very cool. :woohoo:
