SAM58 30 #1 Posted July 18, 2011 A fellow I know has a 1992 520H that has started leaking oil behind the clutch. It set out for several years until this summer and he has put around 30 hours on it before it started leaking. Is it possible to replace the seal on the P220 Onan engine without a total tear down? He said that it leaked about 1/2 qt in 2 - 3 hours of mowing. Any input will be appreciated.
CRE1992 135 #2 Posted July 18, 2011 Could be a no no, but did he try adding any Lucas oil to it? Just an idea.
Jim_M 179 #3 Posted July 18, 2011 It's probably not the crankshaft seal. It's probably the welch plug that's pressed in the block above the crankshaft. It looks like a small freeze plug. You can remove the clutch, clean it up and see where it leaks. If it's the welch plug, tap one one edge lightly with a punch and hammer to make it turn in the hole, pull it out, clean everything up and tap a new plug in. truckin88 104 #4 Posted July 18, 2011 It could be the bearing plate seal it is a PITA, but doable, I replaced that on my 88, replace the crankshaft seal while you are in there, www.onanparts.com
