BPjunk 184 #1 Posted July 18, 2011 I spent my saturday at a local counrty estate auction because of the nice looking Wheel Horse that was in the auctioneers listing. I could not tell by the picture exactly what model it was but the big Onan engine did point itself out to me ! The tractor had not been run in over a year but all the fluids looked clean and with only 444 hours showing on the hour meter they looked to be correct. All the manuals and even the original sales slip was with the tractor. Now this auction was full of antiques and good quailty furniture ....... no cheap junk here, but what was amazing is the Wheel Horse and what turned out to be a model 416-8 (1993 year model) brought more money then any thing else at the auction ! The bidding started at $500.00 right from the begining and realized a final price of $1275.00 ! And this is with out ever hearing the tractor run ! I thought I would have a easy auction win with this tractor as there was not any vehicals parked any where around that could haul this beast home but my 1 ton Chevy p/u during the auction, WRONG as another Chevy p/u came to load it up. A Peco leaf sucker was suppossed to go with the tractor but was not drug out for the auction ........ until I inquiered about once I found still back in the pole barn. mavfreak 11 #4 Posted July 18, 2011 I have been wanting a JD 318 for a long time. Well I seen that one was included in an auction some months ago. I thought maybe I would go and check it out might have been a chance for me to pick one up cheep ( JDs seem to really hold there value). This tractor didn't run missing body pieces seat was shot flat tires, they didn't even clean the mouse nest out of it. The bidding started and my jaw hit the floor when it started a 1000, and I couldn't believe the 3100 final. this same auction I watched a miller 110 welder go for 50 dollars more than what a new one would. IthacaJeff 151 #6 Posted July 18, 2011 I, too, have been sorely disappointed at auctions this spring & summer. For the first time I actually went with the intention to buy a number of different things, including WH stuff. I cannot believe what things went for, it was really amazing how much folks spent on junk. At a large auction that had some 50 or so lawn and garden tractors, a beat up 310-8 with a wicked smoking engine went for nearly $300, anything JD was astronomical, and even crappy old MTDs were in the $200-400 range. (I bought my 310 10 years ago for $100, and has only needed a seat and batter, and last year sold an MTD I got for free for $100). At another auction a larger MTD (18 hp?), no deck, not running, rusted, beat up, went for about $200. I wouldn't pay more that $50, and only for the tires. Anyone with better stories?
