Is this even possible??

Some of you might remember the excellent custom job that Pat did a couple of years ago on a tractor he dubbed the 1047, it started out as a 800 series and he turned it into something really nice and custom. Well, it passed though some hands till it landed in mine at the Charlotte MI show where we loaded it into my Honda to bring home.

Well, about three? weeks ago I sold it to a person who loved it. He called me today, says he was mowing and the pulley assem. that Pat made, a double set up, just snapped of while mowing. Then he sent me pics, he snapped the rod off that the pulley mounts to, I'm talking the steel rod from the tractor to the pulley system. Have any of you folks ever heard of this happening?

I feel bad, but is this something I should be responsible for? The belt,(new) that goes fron the PTO to the pulley set up appeared to be chewed, and the rod inside of the pulleys looks like the metal was twisted and then snapped.

I should have kept her. :woohoo:

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Gerry

I just dont see how you could be liable for that, you had no idea that it would break. arent those rods hardened steel?

Gerry, The pulley was the only thing modified. I modified it by removing the bearing and cutting another pulley set in half and welding it to the original pulley. The only way that the mount (rod) could have broken is if :

1) the bearings in the original pulley siezed on the shaft and twisted it off.

2) the drive belt was not the correct size (too small putting pressure on the end of the mount) but that should have only bent the mount.

3)The mowing deck was run at full throttle for an extended period of time which would have caused the bearings to sieze and possibly do the damage that you have described.

I'm leaning toward the last one. Did you tell him not to run the mower at full throttle?

And before someone jumps in here and says your supposed to run at full throttle, remember, this is a custom built tractor and mowing deck drive system.

Here is a pic of the custom PTO and deck drive pulley!

I have another bracket with the pulley mount. Let me know if you need it.

Thanks guys for the replies, it's good to know it's not just me! :woohoo:

Pat, I told him everything about the rig, and it mowed grass like a demon at 1/2 gas and loved it! And this was on my hills! It is a great little tractor!

I sent you two PM's Pat, send the mount and let me know the $$ for it. It's not my responsibility but I do want to take care of the tractor. Thanks for everything!

Gerry

Gerry, I understand your feeling of responsibility, but it was working when you bought it and when you sold it. I buy and sell quite a bit and they are always bought AS IS and sold AS IS. You are a good guy and that is why it is bothering you, but you cannot be responsible for a used tractor that you sell. Good Luck! -Dennis

Thanks Dennis.

Does anyone know the part number, or a good description of the mounting bracket for this pulley assem. so I can get one? It's the mount for the double pulley next to the tractor.

Thanks for any help!

Gerry :woohoo:
