I scored a 520-H

Wohoo! My father got the whimsy to have himself a Wheel Horse (who wouldn't, if they had any sense?), so I started looking. I came across an 88 520-H, with 498 hours, a so-so 48 inch deck, and the only apparent problem being a non-working tach. The price was $1200, which I whittled down to $1000. It needs some TLC, but I am thrilled with it, and look forward to getting it back into great shape. Did I do ok, or did I get taken? Wheel Horses for sale are rare in our area, but using Ebay as an indicator, I didn't do bad.

I should have elaborated more- he is going to use the Work Horse, while I play with the 520.

I would say that's probably a fair price. It might be a tad high for an 88', but it really depends on condition and location. Even an early straight axle 520 in nice condition can fetch over a grand. The hours are low and that is a plus so I'd say you did okay. I gave less for the 95' I just picked up with two decks, but that was a family deal so I made out.

Time will tell you if you got a good deal or not. If it lasts and lasts then it was a great deal...if your constantly wrenchin on it then maybe not.

The good news is that there isnt any attachment your tractor wont run with that 20hp Onan under the hood.

The only judge on whether you got a good deal or not, is you. If you're happy, then it's a good deal. Like Mike said, only time will really tell if it's a good deal or not. But, for now, if you're happy, then it's a good deal. :whistle:

Ya I guess that is a good price a bit steep for my liking, that's because all my toro's were free. If you want to get it painted get rustoleum IH red good color.

I scored a 1994 520H three years ago for about $120-140... can't remember...and I have done many minor maintenance items...

I think I did OK, and I told the lady it was probably worth a lot more...but that was all I could pay...she just wanted it out of her yard...

ya i am 13 but i have been around toro's for my whole life and know my stuff. I am very good with motors i have also restored 4 of my own tractors. just because i am 13 does not mean that i am ignorant.

Ok slow down there youngin' , this particular thread you dug up and posted your answer into, "is 13 years old" and hasn't been kept up for the same amount of time, so you were talking to the trees in the forest and the most the original poster wasn't going to answer you, I'm glad you have taken a liking to those garden tractors and wanting to contribute, but yourself being 13 years old , don't come on as being smarter than the rest of the guys that have been doing this far  longer than that, and by the way, ignorant means you did not know something before it was brought to your attention. If you want the advice and knowledge of the older members to help you later in life, don't get all cocky at your age.

I'm pushing 60, and if you may have noticed, I am quick to thank all of you guys for your help and knowledge. I know that I will learn more from you than you ever will from me...

That is also why if ever on Red Square, I even get a slight feeling that one of you may think I was being smart alleck instead of joking, I am quick to let you know my true intentions.

I've read and reread this thread.  My take is a young fellow jumps in, got what was perceived as a scolding, responded as a young one might, realized and acknowledge his mistake.  It all began with something that I've done more than once.
