C160 key switch which wires to which points?

Recommended Posts

rustyoldjunk

i know i said the C160 had to wait but i like this machine alot and want it up running and driving so i kept making time.its all together and almost ready to run.i just have to figure out which ignition wire goes where.im thinking i only need three of the 5 wires.the two to each side of the amp gauge and one to the rectifier then the same three go to: the silenoid (one to the big post on the battery side and

one to the little post on the battery side) and the third to the + side of the coil but which wires go where?can someone maybe make a sketch? now the reason im in this boat is two fold.first the wiring harness is gone and im using the C100 for reference but i dont want to tear its factory harness apart to get a positive look and two im the opposite of a wiring expert i dont like it and avoid it if possible.the charts i have found i cant make out which is what.how i got to this point:i pullied a wiring harness from the shelf that i had saved from some off brand tractor that for the ignition switch plug cut the wires i didnt need and started running the ones i did.so........ :WRS: please if you can please help the :imstupid: guy and he will be very very grateful

Jim, I noticed there's no reference markings on the ignition switch on that schematic.....

The 5 terminals should be marked R, B, I, S, and A on the P/N 103990 switch. (or equivalent battery ignition switch)

"R" is for the wire from the B+ terminal on the regulator/rectifier.

"B" is from the negative post on the Amp gauge.

"I" goes to the "+" terminal on the ignition coil. (through the safety switch - if used)

"S" goes to the small post on the starter solenoid (through the safety switch - if used)

"A" is the accessory terminal for headlight power.

If you can... take a picture of the back of your switch and post it... someone here will be able to tell you which prong should be what.

Jim, came across a different c-series wiring diagram that had this important part that was missing earlier.... Hope it helps.

these pics seem to give at least three different ways to run the ignition switch wires.so im still searching, trying to get it wired this evening.at this point the way i have it wired.it spins the engine over and the volt guage seems to be working but i dont have fire to the coil wire.if you were looking at the 5 prong plug with the 5th prong at the bottom i have the top 2 left to right a-b then the middle 2 prongs left to right s-r the bottom center prong is I.any ideas? i switched the r and b and i have fire to the coil and starter all the time with the key off but with it on i had nothing so i switched it back.

I just realized that the diagram I recently posted is the same as the one Jason posted - which is of the correct switch for your tractor.

Pull the switch out of the dash and clean off the white colored insulator material around where the terminals are riveted. I have yet to see an Indak switch that doesn't have the letters "stamped" there. You can't do a custom wiring job unless you can verify the location of the terminals - or you'll fry something if you haven't already.

You only need three wires hooked to the switch to get the engine to turn over and start, and one more wire to the fourth terminal to charge the battery. See if the engine donor tractor has a switch with the letters if this one doesn't.

first off,Jason and TT thank you for your help and second, thank you for your patience TT while i bitched moaned whined and begged for help thru this little aventure.TT just kept answering questions and never once laughed at me (at least out loud).being a wiring rookie,i made things harder on myself by changing ignition switches and silenoids woundering if they were bad,in the process i figured out that even if the prongs are the same it doesnt mean the key switches wire the same.after changing silenoids and key switches back.i finally got it wired right.i put the tank on,changed out fuel filters ran the gas line and took it for a test ride, then came back put the clutch spring on and adjusted the brake linkage and took a long test ride.it runs and drives great, better then my C100 i think.once again thank you jason and TT.

We wouldn't have gave up until you got it running. (and not once did I laugh!)

I've been there too many times myself! :D

You're most welcome. That's what this board is for, questions, answers and discussions... not to laugh at somebody or make anyone feel unwanted or less of a collector. We're all here because we love these little red machines!

You are right though, and I'm glad you realized it. You can't just change switches around... there are so many versions out there made for so many different applications. three prong, four prong, five, six, seven.... and then like you said... they can be arranged multiple ways depending on who and what it was originally made for.

Glad you got your tractor running, now

Maybe you can do a wiring FAQ for us?
