546cowboy 302 #1 Posted July 9, 2011 :woohoo: Has anyone had experience with those 10 h.p. diesel engines on Ebay? Would like to know how they compare to a 17 to 20 h.p. Kohler or Onan. I am reluctant to put one of those Chinese motors in an American classic but with what people want for a good motor, it may be my only choice. The prices asked for a good Kohler with unknown hours is getting a little out-of-hand. I recently picked up a C-175 with K17 that's done for and I'm thinking for $600 or so it might just be a keeper. can whlvr 994 #2 Posted July 9, 2011 i know a fair number of members have put the chinese motors on their machines and it seems they all are happy with them,i dont know how they will start in winter after they get some hours on them but that remains to be seen,if your budget only allows for a chinese motor then i say go for it,i have no idea if they would compare to a 18 kohler but it will do anything you ask from what the others say Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

littleredrider 409 #5 Posted July 10, 2011 I don't have a build thread, but I have one of the evil bay Chinese 10 horse diesels. I put it on a 1991 520 hydro. It fits under the hood, but had to take the air filter housing off. No big deal. Needed to get a spacer to run the original 520s pulley and PTO stuff. Off evil bay as well. All my other tractors are 3 or 8 speed gear tranny's so took some getting used to with the hydro. It feels like it slips, but it doesn't. And since I got it with no motor, and can't say how it compares to the 20 horse Onan. I mostly just put around with it, hook up the wagon and help out my mother with some rocks or something, so far nothing real heavy. There are some steep hills at her house, and the tractor will climb with the hydro all the way forward, and the throttle not even half, and it pulls no problem. Motor doesn't even sound like it's working. I've had the motor in the tractor and running for a couple months now I think, and filled the tank with diesel, about a gallon maybe, and still has half left. Fuel economy is excellent!!! Better than the other tractors I have.... The old adage you get what you pay for can apply to most chi-com products, but I got a Chinese 1000 watt generator a few years ago at Big Lots of all places. It was less than $120 so I wanted to get one to fiddle with because I'm always experimenting with off-grid living and what not. Anyway, this stupid little chi-com gas genset can't be beat. It's a gas sipping little worker. It starts easy (in warm weather) and it's got a reliable gen head on it. During a very severe tornadic storm in 2010, my wife and I laid low in the basement and powered our necessary items (laptop, ham radios, small TV, fan, and sump pump) with no trouble. The genny ran for 7.5 hours on 1.5 year old gasoline. I'm going to watch this. If my Briggs kicks the bucket, I'm going to repower my tractor in chi-com diesel.
