CRE1992 135 #1 Posted July 7, 2011 I am looking at getting a 416H the price is right, and I am going to look at it tomorrow. The guy is selling it for his in laws, he said it has been in their shed for 4 years because they hired a lawn service. I asked him to tell me the fluid levels, said engine was good, he has not tried to start it because the battery is dead. The tranny fluid is a little low, and looking at a picture of the rear axle it appears that it has seeped some. I also noticed the pto is engaged... I am going tomorrow to look at it and bringing a battery, a grease gun, socket set, fresh gas, 10w30 oil and start fluid. Is there anything I should else I should look for...? Sparky-(Admin) 23,256 #2 Posted July 7, 2011 I have that same tractor and its a awsome machine! I have mowed occasionally with it but I mainly bought it to run my single stage blower which it does perfectly. The 16 ONAN just loves to work and is a real torque monster which is important when chuckin deep snow. (I apalogize for the snow pic in the middle of summer guys ! Mike......... rmaynard 16,346 #3 Posted July 7, 2011 (I apologize for the snow pic in the middle of summer guys ! Mike......... On a day when the temperature reached 92 here in Maryland, a little snow looks good. :woohoo:
CRE1992 135 #4 Posted July 7, 2011 Thanks Sparky (mike) I appreciate it, I have a 520H and that thing is a Torque Monster , I was towing a mtd rider which ways 650lbs with it and the mtd's wheel locked sideways, and I flipped it over on its side lol Flipping it back over was another story!! AND no this is not the MTD whose engine is for sale in the classifieds! :D
dgoyette 12 #5 Posted July 7, 2011 I run the same set up as Sparky - 416H and single stage. I agree with him that it is a fine tractor. The one your looking at looks pretty nice. The hydro filter looks like it hasn't been changed in a while and is not a WH filter. Get the hydro nice and warm when testing. Since we are talking snow, ere is a video I did moving some serious snow. Onan sounds great to my ears!
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #6 Posted July 8, 2011 I'd be hard-pressed to believe there would be any problems with an Eaton 1100 hydro unit @ 430 hours - and the changed filter means it's been serviced at least once. The oil down over the back of the tranz could have spilled there from the last oil change. If you've ever tried to add oil without venting the case, you know what I mean. I'm not so sure I'd get all wound up about dragging the tools, gas, battery, etc. along though..... once it's running, the seller might raise the price. It's a nice machine, but don't get caught up in the thrill of a "new" tractor and make too quick of a decision/deal. :ROTF:
CRE1992 135 #7 Posted July 8, 2011 Thanks TT, I know what you mean about the hydro, but what bolt should be pulled to help the air vent, any picture?
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #8 Posted July 8, 2011 Thanks TT, I know what you mean about the hydro, but what bolt should be pulled to help the air vent, any picture? The back bolt that secures the fender bracket to the top transaxle housing should do the trick. It's right beside the dipstick tube.

boovuc 1,090 #10 Posted July 8, 2011 TT is correct on all counts. I've also seen tranneys where they will seep a little oil over time at the lower case seams. Both hydros and manuals. Make sure when you check the rear level that you check it with the dip stick all the way down and above all, make sure no debris gets in that rear end. It looks as though it was at the very least garaged during it's life time. It looks nice. Hopefully the engaged PTO is something the owner just recently did and it hasn't been in contact with the clutch face all that time. I don't think even then it would present much of an issue. With you bringing a battery, I would see if you can confirm the hour meter is working. There are a lot of permanently low hour tractors out there! Just see if you can get it to fire briefly in the owner's presence. Getting him down in price won't be on the table if you get it running. All the best! nylyon-(Admin) 7,959 #11 Posted July 8, 2011 You'd be hard pressed to find a better tractor than a 416-H with an Onan. I love mine, and do use it for mowing. The Onan is a 2 cylinder engine and vibration is very limited. When operating it has a wonderful tone to it which will rhythmically lull you into a mowing trance. It doesn't bog down, and will power through just about anything. The Eaton 11 (also known as an 1100) is an outstanding hydro. The only issue you are likely to encounter would be cold weather operation when it will take some time to "warm" up. I've been using my 416 as my primary tractor for almost 18 years and it still performs as it did with .2 hours on it, oh and they're great looking to boot! SNYFIX 13 #12 Posted July 8, 2011 Ascertain if it's a factory or aftermarket filter. Always wary when aftermarkets are used. To us it looks like it's building up pressure like the dipstick isn't venting. (They had a problem with that in the early 5XI's but was eaily fixed with a replacement dipstick under warranty). One trick to fast filling of the trans is to leave the filter off untill the last quart that you can dribble in.
312Hydro 474 #13 Posted July 8, 2011 Is there anything I should else I should look for...? Yes,The admiring stares of your neighbors as you cut the grass! That's a nice looking ! Great find :woohoo:
CRE1992 135 #14 Posted July 8, 2011 I bought it, the price was rediculois, pm me if you want to know the price. I'll clean it up and grease it when I get home and take some pictures. I added a little gas, and put the battery from my 520H in it and it roared to life... Now bad for sitting for four years... lol I cut the grass on with it, looked at the grass and was like wtf... look under the deck again, the middle blade was upside down lmao. CRE1992 135 #16 Posted July 8, 2011 Ill let you all take guesses Ill give you a range, $350-750. The dollar amount ends in a 0, cents not included... I would get pictures but its raining like hell, and I want to clean it up first its a little dusty... Everything works, the story is actually that the guy was selling it for his mother in law because her father died and it was his tractor, I am going to try to charge the battery that came with it. It is real nice, the hour meter is correct it reads 430.8 Hours now I just found out its a 1995, even better! It also runs smooth and quiet, you can engage the mower deck and its silent, doesnt even sound like its mowing until you look at the shoot on the side and see grass flying out =D I also didn't realize how much smaller it is than my 520H holy smokes! Ken B 3,189 #17 Posted July 8, 2011 I don't feel much like guessing but anything under 750 sounds like a good deal. :woohoo:
CRE1992 135 #18 Posted July 8, 2011 Fine Ill give in since no one wants to guess... I wound up paying $380...

CRE1992 135 #22 Posted July 9, 2011 Thanks! I cut the grass with it today, after I flipped the one blade over, and wow is all I can say it has a beautiful cut, and has no rust or rot on the mower. Ill post a pic of the grass cut later. The blades were amazingly sharp when I was thinking of taking them off, there was no need to. The sound of the onan when the govenor opens up is awesome it sounds like a mack truck. Unfortunately I have not yet got to mow with my 520H and 60inch deck because of some technical difficulties with the center pulley. I just finished mowing with it. I went to the local toro dealer and they were closed, I didn't feel like driving all of the way over to another one. So needless to say I didn't get the filters. However Monday I will =]. Question, the pto pulley on the crank, is the belt for the mower deck supposed to be in the groove closest to the engine or one farther away? And I will post pictures later after she is done drying off just gave her a bath . Thanks Charles

LuckyJohn 0 #25 Posted July 9, 2011 I also bought a 416H this year and it is awesome, have had small issues with it but nothing major or just something needing replaced (mower blades). You will enjoy it, and if you really enjoy it a lot then I will step up and offer to take that 520 off of your hands. lol
