D series

Ok I have the bug. I recently bought the 310-8 and have pretty much killed my entire lawn hauling stuff around. So now I want another. Seems like there are a ton of old wheelhorses by me but yesterday saw first D series forsale. Are they rare? Worth money? Its a complete D-180 perfect working order with a 3pt hitch. He is asking 600. I am real tempted is this a good deal? Maybe everyone should tell me it's a bad deal for sake of my marriage...

The price doesn't sound bad. They're not extremely rare but parts for them are becoming rare.

3pts themselves can sell for almost 1/2 of that cost. They are a beast, and it takes a lawn just to turn them! :woohoo:

They have their owns sets of issues. If you have a good supply of tools & like to work on them, you should buy it. But I must warn you, I have several, & I would not say any are in perfect working order & I wouldn't sell any of mine for $600.00. I can promise you, it leaks. The front of the hydro pump, either end of the manifolds, hose connections, hoses, axel seals, steering is sloppy,p.t.o. clutch. Some common problems. engine to hydro coupler strips out, diff bolts brake in rear & crack case plus what I mentioned above & parts avaliability ,as mentioned. The hydros are finiky like an old mule. Not trying to discourage you, just letting you know. Good luck :woohoo:

I got my first wheelhorse, d-160, about a month ago. I have been impressed with the tractor. It has taken quite a bit of TLC to get it running right. Me and the onan bf have become very fimilar with each other. The tractor has not been maintained but it is working great. After a head decarbing, new intake manifold, valve job, and carb kit I am very happy with it. The hydro works great after an oil and filter change. I have not spotted any leaks in the hydro system. The steering has about 1/3 of a turn of play in it, that will be fixed later. For now a good suicide knob makes it a non issue. I have been very pleased with my purchase and impressed with the quality of the tractor. It feels more stout than either of my massey/snapper tractors, but I like the ergonomics of the MFs.

PS. My wife like to mow with the D-160.

Geese Tom....you scared him away :woohoo:

:ROTF:

I would buy it for that price if even if it's in less than nice shape. Although Tom is exactly right on EVERY aspect he touched on, they are still a cool tractor :D

I think you should at least give it more thought. Throw some weight on that 3 pt, get a set of chains, and get a plow then push the heck out of the snow...

I was just joking :woohoo: None of that stuff happens. I made it all up. Buy that tractor. We can help you fix everything except the hydro. But there's a new chap from the UK thats getting them figured out. :D

Thanks guys. I wasn't looking for a D in the first place so a little reality check was all I needed. I would rather spend the cash on one I am looking for. I just considered it bc it was the first one I have seen forsale in NJ.

I have a 1978 D-200 and have experienced many of the aforementioned issues. However, I have not been discouraged from using my D and really enjoy it's power. It does leak so I have to check the hydro fluid level regularly. And the steering is a bit loose but otherwise it's a great tractor.

I'm kind of guessing that would be me!

I live in the :woohoo: , D series are rare here, particularly the D-200, and parts even harder to get than in the US as there aren't tractors being parted out but it didn't discourage me from taking one on as a project :D . I've started a thread here D-120 restoration

Re my hydro reverse issue, I have a new spring but can't realistically fit it and test it while I'm working with the front end off the ground but I'll let you know when I do.

It's interesting how this D series thread has got hijacked a bit, I did much the same with one on a D-200 reversing problem. As I see it we really need a one stop 'D' section on the forum; at present you have to search all over the place to find threads that might be helpful. D's have issues all of their own. What do you think guys? :ROTF:
