HPPE 0 #1 Posted July 7, 2011 I'm trying to decide what to do with this 701 sitting in my shop. Mechanically what is wrong with it is the starter/generator is needing rebuilt. Cost approx $200.00. When I pulled it out of a barn 3 years ago it had been parked for probably 15 years. I filed the points, cleaned and reassembled the fuel pump, filled it with fresh gas and it started right up. Of course it puffs a little oil smoke but don't they all? It has no deck or attachments but is complete. The plastic dash is broken but other than that, it appears to be all original, meaning original paint and decals, original 7hp Kohler, correct seat, steering wheel, fenders, etc. I bought the tractor a few months ago for personal reasons ($200) and am considering sinking the $200 in it to rebuild the S/G. I can't see getting back out of it what I will have in it, ($400) but I do know there are alot of parts on this 50 year old beast that some of you are looking for. Like the wide belt cover for the double belt pulleys, the belt cover for the tranny drive belt, hitch cable, fenders, seat, foot rests, etc. It's all there and all original. I really don't want to hold onto it any longer so I'm thinking go ahead and fix the S/G and put it on Craigslist and ebay and let it go. Any suggestions? It is located in Lubbock Texas. whfan74 2,072 #2 Posted July 7, 2011 If you were closer, I would love to have it. Please don't part this one out. Planning a road trip to the Indiana area anytime soon? :woohoo:
CasualObserver 3,411 #3 Posted July 7, 2011 What's wrong with the starter? I would say shop around for that rebuild. $200 seems high to me. I had mine done by a small auto electric shop for $45. But mine was just new brushes and field posts. Find a small country shop. A lot of the big ones quote you a high rebuild because they don't really want to do it, they just want to sell you a new one. But typically Joe Schmo's Auto Electric or Willie Fixit's Alternator Shop a few miles out of town in a guy's machine shed will be more reasonable.
HPPE 0 #4 Posted July 7, 2011 The armature is bad is the reason for the higher price estimate. The shop that I use regularly has always done me right and he just called to say he has a good armature sitting on a shelf, so with this armature plus new bearings and brushes he'll have me out tomorrow for approx $150. Gerry w 2 #5 Posted July 7, 2011 I'm with Scott! Please don't part it out! There are folks here that would love to own a rig like that!
71_Bronco 1,072 #6 Posted July 7, 2011 I'm gonna have to agree and please don't part it out. are you looking to get rid of it cause you just don't use it? or is it to fund another tractor? Me personally, I say fix it up and use it. my first tractor will be the 71 Bronco I am redoing. I chose to redo an old wheel horse because I know it is a quality tractor, and even after I redo it, cost to me will be less then buying a new one, it's a win-win for me! Plus if I maintain it, I can hopefully pass it down to my son someday.

MikesRJ 558 #9 Posted July 8, 2011 Pretty complete machine you have there. Like the others have said. Don't part it out whatever you do. Nice machine and a great candidate for a restore. From what part of the country do you hail?
racinfool40 203 #10 Posted July 8, 2011 It is located in Lubbock Texas. Sorry Mike. I'm sure someone would take her of your hands if you decide to let her go!! And I agree with everyone else 200.00 is awful high for a rebuild.. :D
HorseFixer 2,013 #11 Posted July 8, 2011 That tractor is worth way more than $200.00 so I wouldnt sell it for that. If I were you you could easily sell it on CL for $400.00 + the way it is. Personally I would get the starter fixed for the 150.00 and restore it. Complete 701's are hard to come by and one of the more sought after WH tractors to collect but it all depends what you want to do.. I do have quite a few relatives in Texas and some in West Texas Cheers ~Duke :D
Calebintn 1 #12 Posted July 8, 2011 I just had.a starter generator rebuild and it cost me $178.00 so thats not too far out of line.
HPPE 0 #13 Posted July 9, 2011 Well, I got the starter/generator back ($150)... Put it back on the tractor, put a hot battery on it, hit the start button and it might have turned over three times and fired right up. Runs like a top. Now she just needs someone to love her and give her the attention she needs. As soon as I get some more pics, it'll probably be found on CL and Ebay.
