1996 520 h with 60 inch deck

Ive got a question my brother and i purchased a snow blower a 1996 wheel horse 520 h and rear cast iron wheel weights a couple weeks ago for 700.00 the tractor was used at a dealer ship until 2008 to pull trailers with then they went out of business this guy bought it with a 60 inch deck but its eating belts do u need a special mule drive for the 60 inch deck cause looks like belt is running on the side of the pulley to me more then in the middle. but for what we gave for it and the snow blower was used only 3 times still has original paint looks like brand new didnt think we went wrong at 700 dollars and tractor has zero rust looks great other then paint has faded a little from the years but runs strong and no smoke. but im interested in knowing if maybe got the wrong mule drive for the 60 inch deck

Hello, I am no expert on this, but the 60" deck that I have does use a different mule drive for the front. That should be your problem. :woohoo:

Hi Wes,

The 520-H/60" deck does use a different mule drive.

Go to our classified section under "wanted" and ask our vendors out there for the correct setup.

If you got that tractor for 700, you did very well.

Check to see what pulley grove it is riding on the engine. It should be the inside one...

Has it went through more than one belt in two weeks and are you using a Toro belt or is it an aftermarket belt? The 60" deck does use the special spring loaded mule drive but using a regular unit normally shouldn't have caused any problem so quickly.

No it doesnt chew belt up that fast it just wearing the belt down at an angle then belt starting to frey like i said just bought the tractor couple weeks ago and noticed the old belt guy sent with it looked like it was wore funny and noticed the belt that he had on it was freying and when we took the deck off yesturday noticed the belt was wearing same way the other one did so i thought at one time i seen something here on redsquare that it took a difrent mule drive for the 60 inch deck. I tell u ive been around wheelhorses all my life and ive learned a ton about them on here i see i got the wrong mule drive so now im in need of one to fix problem correctly

OK when you said the tractor was "eating belts" I assumed it had done a lot of damage in just those few weeks. Changing to the other mule drive might help the problem but it is still best to use a correct size OEM belt.

Is the snow blower a single stage or a 2-stage?
