m2salmon 0 #1 Posted June 26, 2011 I followed a tutorial that I found here on static timing to set the points on my K241. The process involved using a voltmeter to measure when the resistance spiked, when the points opened and closed. The problem I'm running into is that it seems that I can't adjust the points to open early enough. I started by gapping to 0.020" to get in the ballpark, then tried to get the points to open, using the voltmeter method, when the S appeared in the timing view-window in the bearing plate. After about 2 hours of tweeking of the adjustment screw and adjustable contact leg and re-checking the timing, the best I got was a 0.038" gap, and the contacts still opened several degrees past when the S had gone through the viewing window. It seems that the push-rod that actuates the movable contact on the points doesn't start to move until after the S is past the window. The engine is old, but I can't imaginge the camshaft lobe that actuates the points pushrod is worn to the point that it is causing delayed timing. I am rotating the flywheel clockwise, when looking at it. Not sure what to do. Any ideas?
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #2 Posted June 26, 2011 Remove & measure the points pushrod length. I'm about 95% sure that a new one is 1.550".
