rondo 0 #1 Posted June 2, 2008 I haven't got a 'horse yet, but I've been looking. I've had lawn and garden tractors for years and I'm finally looking at adding a Wheel Horse without spending too much. I've seen an 857 and a 1054 on ebay that aren't too far a drive, but I know very little about all the different models. I'm really only looking to push a little snow and maybe do some ground work (scraper, plow, anything that digs in) and cut grass on ocassion. I know that one has a snowblower with it and the other (1054) has some blades. Are these models good for work other than cutting? What are the main differences and any other info that might help me in my search for a 'horse. I'm not limiting my search to these two, but they are a start at my learning what is what with the different models. Thanks everyone. Great forum, by the way. HorseFixer 2,013 #3 Posted June 3, 2008  rondo the best thing for you to do is go the the picture gallery and look at all the pictures. If you just want a good working horse a C series is a good choice. in the Wheel Horse line there are approximatley 475 to choose from. It all depends what you want to do. I have had a 857 and I have a 1054 they are both good tractors! Cheers Duke
tdearstine 0 #4 Posted June 3, 2008 I just got an 857 about two months ago, after some minor repairs and maintainence I am using it every day, really impressed at its great pulling power and the rear discharge deck makes a really nice cut, Tom
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #5 Posted June 3, 2008 :D My suggestion would be to find a 1973 or newer model with the Attach-Matic hitch system and the "standard" 12" rear tires. It will be a lot easier to find attachments, weights, chains, etc. and the interchangeability with most similar models up to 2008 is unmatchable! Look for something in the 12 to 16 horsepower range if you plan on working the tractor on a regular basis. If you are looking for something to tinker with or show off to your friends and neighbors, then just about any Wheel Horse is a good one. Keep us "in the loop" if you find something you're unsure of. We'll be glad to offer our advice - whether it's right or wrong.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,610 #6 Posted June 3, 2008 I concur with TT and Duke. I have two C-series tractors, a '79 C-141 and a C-125 and attachments interchange between both as well as my newer '98 314-8.
rondo 0 #7 Posted June 6, 2008 Thanks, everyone, for the help and advice. I missed out on the 857 - it looked pretty good too - hope to check out the 1054, or maybe have a line on a GT-14. I'll keep bugging you folks for help as I go...hope ya don't mind.
Teddy da Bear 11 #8 Posted June 7, 2008 If your looking for interchangability.....the GT-14 is not the way to go. From my understanding....most things made for it.....work for it only. If you find one that is a "package deal" with everything you will need now and in the future, I say then consider it. It is a very sought after tractor and more ruggedly built than most. But it is what other's have termed and "oddball". I agree with the majority. Find a B or C series from the mid to late 70's and I think you will be able to find many more still available attachments. HorseFixer 2,013 #9 Posted June 8, 2008 I agree with the Teddy Bear on the attatchment things. But one thing about the GT-14 tho that babby has some awesome weight I have afriend that has one and it MOWS LIKE THE DICKENS! Cheers Duke
rondo 0 #10 Posted June 9, 2008 This is a great board and I'm sure I'll become an "active" member, soon. I'm in southeast Michigan (near Port Huron) and I'd love to know if anyone has a line on something (preferably w/in 3-4 hours drive) for sale. I noticed that quite a few members are in Michigan and, like I said, I'd like to look at some tractors, whether to purchase or just get some ideas. Thanks, Mike
