decal removal

whats the best way to remove old decals?.

like the big ones on the hood of a c-160.

heat?

sanding?

It all depends on what you plan to do the hood after you get the decal off. If I am going to bead blast the hood, I use a propane torch to heat the decal, and a putty knife to scrape it off. If I am trying to avoid damage to the paint, I use a hair dryer and a plastic scraper.

Any residual glue can be softened and removed with mineral spirits.

One of those eraser wheels that auto parts stores work great and don't damage the paint.

Ez off oven cleaner and a plastic scraper or you can spend the big bucks at the auto paint store and buy the right stuff.

well after a little elbow grease i think i'll leave the decals as they are and just paint around them. this is just gonna be a working horse so no need for new decals. thanks for the tips though.
