dano53 1 #1 Posted June 26, 2011 Just noticed the other day when I started my tractor the seat switch light stayed on the whole time I was mowing. I pulled the switch out and checked it with an ohm meter and it seems fine. Anybody ever had this happen? It only comes on when I turn the key on or have it running. Save Old Iron 1,568 #2 Posted June 26, 2011 First step is to check the actual operation of the seat switch in the tractor. Sit in the seat, PTO off, start the tractor, engage the PTO and lift yourself off the seat. The tractor should stall out due to the seat switch instructing the tractor to kill the magneto ignition for operator safety. This will test the function of the seat switch in both the RUN and KILL modes. Please be aware the indicator lights do not create any electrical conditions in the tractor, they only "look" at the electrical signals present at the switches they are assigned to watch. Assuming this is the 1987 version 312 you have listed in your signature, Diagram taken from Toro's Demystification guide simplifying the diagram to show your area of concern The indicator board is looking for a ground at pin 7 of the indicator board edge connector in order to extinguish the "operator off the seat" indication. Two ways to test the pin # 7 signal. Either measure the VOLTAGE at pin # 7 with the tractor running - PTO off - and check pin #7 goes to near 0 volts when the operator is in the seat or with the tractor off and the positive battery cable disconnected - check to see pin # 7 goes to ground - near 0 ohms displayed on the ohmmeter when the operator is in the seat If the correct conditions exist at the edge connector of the indicator board, the indicator board could be defective or need the contacts cleaned on the circuit board / edge connector. If the correct signal is not seen at pin #7 on the indicator board, check green wiring back to the seat switch. Post your results :hide:

dano53 1 #4 Posted June 26, 2011 Great information. Thanks I'll check it out and post my findings.
dano53 1 #5 Posted June 26, 2011 Well I checked things out. It didn't kill the engine getting off the seat with the PTO engaged. So I checked the green wire out at the board and found the seat switch worked when operated by hand but not getting on and off the seat. Turns out the seat switch was up too high and wouldn't activate correctly. I removed a washer on top which lowered the switch and now everything works fine and the light goes out . Thanks for making that all very clear. Dano :hide:
Save Old Iron 1,568 #6 Posted June 27, 2011 You are welcome Dano. Let's keep an eye on it to make sure it is not an intermittent switch. Glad to help.
