snowhound 106 #1 Posted June 22, 2011 Just bought a 418-8, or at least that is what is is claimed to be I haven't got the numbers yet to check. It has a 48" deck with collection system. Needs a little electrical work I think it has a bad safety switch but otherwise looks and sounds good. I know it backfires often when shut off and I mean the M80 type, any ideas on what to check to correct or reduce that problem. I don't have it home yet and won't have it here until 4th. of July week, I will post photos then Ed

boovuc 1,090 #3 Posted June 22, 2011 Hi Ed, On the magnums, the books says to shut the engine off with the throttle at half open. (I shut my M10 off at three-quarter open). I let it idle down to cool off after using it and just as I turn the key off, I open the throttle. No backfire! Sounds like a nice machine. Before anyone else says it......... Good Luck with her! JC 1965 1,532 #4 Posted June 22, 2011 :) This is the first I've heard about the backfire problem. My 1991 312-8 has never had A backfire problem. After using it I idle the engine down ( like I do on all my tractors ) to let it cool down, then after A few minutes I shut it down with the engine in idle speed. It never backfires. :WRS:
Duff 206 #5 Posted June 22, 2011 Actually, the shut down backfire was discussed here at some length a year or two ago. General consensus was, as I recall, to throttle down and let it idle for a couple of minutes before shutting it off. My M-12's used to backfire like deer rifles going off, but since then I've let them idle and cool off - nary a poof! Duff :hide:
varosd 1,185 #6 Posted June 22, 2011 I agree to let the down the throttle and then shut it down...no issues with my B-80 since doing this!! Don V
