tried to mow with the 1054, couple issues...

well i tried to mow with the 1054 tonight, it was getting late and i kind of just threw in the towel. it seemed to be running fine the other day, not it is making horrid noises while i let out the clutch, whats weird is it sounds like its coming from the hydraulic pump, its tough to tell when you have a running engine. anyway, how do i check the fluid level on the pump? Its been running fine so i never thought anything off it but if indeed the noise is coming from the pump i want to be able to check the fluid. its all jerking much worse when i let the clutch out, but once its moving everything is fine. guess i better do a better job of cleaning the pulleys and maybe a new belt is in order. also, how are the belt guides (not sure if thats what they are called, the little wire piece on the motor and rear fender) supposed to be set? and finally, while mowing there appears to be a lot of slack in the deck belt, i set the tension while the deck is up, does that change when i lower it?

Juss10:

The hydro pump can be accessed by taking the cover off in front of the shift lever. The pump will have a access bolt with a port for refilling the hydro fluid.

Sounds like the tension adjustment on the belt is not right but I also think you may have to take the PTO side belt cover off the tractor to check the hydro pump belt and the pulleys for dirt, wear and proper clutching function.

The mower deck manual shoudl have the exact instructions for lightenign the pto to deck belt.

Thanks Lane!

what tension adjustment are you talking about?

i should have asked what kind of fluid do you use in the hydro pump?

also if i want to check the pulleys at the engine, can i just slide the PTO bell pulley off at the engine? thanks

Justin the hydro pump uses regular hydraulic fluid If your hearing a whining noise

It's probably low on fluid The fill cap on the pump tank should NOT be straight up on the top of the tank !!!! Is should be pointed down at the shifter So as to not over fill the tank

JUSS10:

This is a photo that shows the tension adjustment rod on the right lower portion of the picture .

It has a black knob extended to the front of the tractor by the axle-for setting the belt from the PTO thru the mule drive on the side of the mower deck to the center pulley.

If you do not have this rod you can not adjust the belt for tension. You can use a long bolt if you do not have the rod.

The 48 inch deck will mow good for big lawns and fields but it will not have a smoonth cut unless the blades are shapened well.

Like INDYWH said you use hydraulic fluid for the pump and a funnel should be able to be used with very little trouble when the shifting plate cover is off.
