keeping this C160 in the family w/ a 312 8

my father in law bought this C160 about 14 years ago.i wasnt in the family then,im told it was restored and a very very nice machine.he gave $1200-$1500.(couldnt remember exactly).im not sure how long he used it but eventually he said it broke a pin in the transaxle and it stopped moving.he told me he took the transaxle apart and replaced the broken pin with a non harden bolt, which soon broke again,at that point it was left to sit.some time down the road my father in law gave it to my brother in law,who parked it out beside the garage to keep for parts for his two wheel horse tractors.the engine was used from it as was other parts and parts were stripped off and left beside the tractor or some were in the garage.my brother in law gave me what was left and i brought it home.so with the two very rough 312 8's i hauled in recently sitting around i decided i would try to get the C160 together and running.both the 312's are beat bad and have wiring issues, more parts machines then easy fixes.i decided to start both 312's and find out wich had the better engine, they both started and ran and it turns out the 312 with the 1 1/8 axles had the better running engine so in the shop it came.i will pull the transaxle out of the C160 to rebuild when i get time, for now the rearend, engine and whatever parts i can use/need from the 312 will go onto the C160.i still need a seat pan,my brother in law kept the one from the C160 to replace the plastic one on his wheel horse.heres some pics of the C160 as it sits and the tear down of the 312.i am going to work on tearing the C160 down today until i have to go to a birthday party.i will hopefully update this tonight or tomorrow.

my brother in laws boys (teenagers) were pushing and riding this thing down the big hill behind the garage where it sat and bent the steering wheel.luckily the 312 has a good steering wheel from an older wheel horse on it.as i took the 312 apart i noticed it looked as if the the transaxle had been out or replaced before also and the k301 looks like an older one to me also but im not sure.

Kelly

You should trade the fender pan off one you are parting out, for the orig. one, if he has the plastic fenders the fuel tank is under the fender and he will have to cut holes to make it fit, but one off your 312's should bolt right on.

engine bolted in and now it will have to wait until i have alittle more time to mess with it.at a later time i hope to tear it back apart go thru it right and repaint it.but for now i need to get it up and running.there are too many non runners around the place and most get sold.i should have waited to put this together but i knew if i didnt use the parts now i might end up selling them and this would have been a shevled tractor until way later.

Well Done! :WRS:

You'll be riding soon!

This is what I REALLY like about Wheel Horse. The interchangeability of parts is such a huge advantage, particularly as we move into the future.

I am glad the oldster is getting fixed first! And it should make the family feel good about it too!

Keep up the good work :D :D

well i was thinking along the same line as Kelly and decided as long as the original pieces are still around that came on this C160 i should try to get them on it so in spite of being way busy this week i got ahold of my brother in law to work out a swap on seat pans and got the original back.a couple pics of it sitting on the tractor.

on an interesting side note.while working on this tractor i wanted to move the hubs out alittle farther on the hubs.i have played that game before and wasnt suprised when the hubs were froze in place.the first one came loose pretty easy and moved where i wanted it. two days of soaking and being way to rough with the other side produced no progress,but.......ten minutes with a 3 prong puller done the trick.
