I tried to run my 857 with the correct k181s motor on it and I can't get any spark threw the spark plug. It has a new spark plug, coil, and battery. When I put every thing back together after I painted it I cleaned all the terminals. I cleaned the points and set the points to .020 gap. The regulater has four terminals and they are all hooked up as they should I think. The motor turns over when I try to start it. I get some volts at the end of the lead that hooks to the top of the coil. I thought that maybe the condenser was not working so I hooked the one from my C-81 and still no spark. I must be missing something.

Make sure that all of your grounds are good. 12volts goes to (+) side of coil. (-) side is connected to condenser and points. Condenser has to be grounded.

If you painted the engine, I would suspect that it is a grounding problem.

That is the same diagram that I went off of. I am going to take all conacts apart and clean them and make sure all grounds are claen and free of paint and dirt be back soon.

Checked connections all look good. I wasn't paying attention to what I was holding when I cranked the motor over and it bit me good so I know for fact that it is getting plenty of juice. When I crank it over I am getting three and a half volts out the top of the lead coming off the coil.

Where exactly are you getting 3.5 volts? At the (+) terminal? You should be getting whatever the battery voltage is when the key is turned to the run position.

I am getting the 3.5 volts at the top of the lead coming off the top of the coil where the spark plug connects. I only get that when I crank the motor over. I don't get any volts on the + side of the coil when the key is in the on position only when I crank the motor over. Do you think I have a bad ignition or and bad regulator .

When the key is on, you should have 12v on the + side of the coil, if not trace that wire back and see if it has a break or a bad ign. switch.

From the top of the coil, 20,000 volts +/- is produced. You can't check it with a normal meter. As I said in my previous post, you should have 12+ volts at the + terminal of the coil with the key turned on. If you don't, you won't get your 20,000 volts out of the top of the coil. I guess in a way you are lucky. Since it's not working right, you didn't fry your meter.

Take a wire and connect directly from the (+) terminal of the battery to the (+) terminal of the coil. If it starts, you have a wiring problem or a bad switch.

I connected + of battery to + of coil and got the plug to spark. I have all new wires ran so I know they are good so it must be the ignition switch. I went to napa and the only had three prong switches with the letters b, m, and s. I need one with b, I, and s. who sells them. Thanks for all the help. Good thing I don't pay my bills working on garden tractors.

The ignition switch that you need is a high amperage one, since there is no start solenoid on the 857.

I'm not sure if NAPA has them, but part number 95521B is a Cole Hersee switch that is a replacement for the Toro 4988 switch. They can be ordered from various online venders.

I am putting all these new patrs on and was thinking of puting a new regulator on to. The one on the wiring diagram shows a three terminal regulator. The one that is on it now has three in the front and one in the back. I can't find any part #s in my owners manuals for the regulator to check if it is correct. Does anyone now the correct part # and if there should be three or four teminals? The one on there now has f terminal on regulater going to f terminal on starter/genarator and battery terminal going to battery terminal and L terminal going to lighter and the terminal oon the back going to the a terminal on the starter/generator. Is this correct?
