Where can I buy a starter/generator for my 702?

The starter/generator on my Wheel Horse 702 locked up today...I was mowing and I just heard a belt squeal....sure enough the starter/generator is culprit. I removed the belt and the engine will turn by hand, but the starter will not. I have limited knowledge of these older tractors, and would like some advice as to where I can buy a replacement, or who can repair this. The model number is Delco-Remy 1101933.

I also have a 702 with that starter/generator...thinking mine is on it's last leg too. I think I would go to a NAPA near you and ask if they have somebody they send this kind of stuff out to for repair. I am going to try to find one at a show and tear it down to check it out. I would think you can get parts. Depends on how broke yours is and the damage caused...but worth checking out. Let us know what you find out.

Maybe Kohler still has them, or knows where to find them. :)

Have any old mechanics around you? Maybe someone that works on farm equipment. Have them or yourself pull the ends off and most likely will just need a couple of bearings. Have put a bearings in quite a few in my years of wrench turning. Mike

Well Mark, being you were kind enough to put your location in your profile, I went to http://www.yellowpages.com and looked under "automotive electric". I found at least a half dozen places within 15 miles of Doylestown that can probably help you. Let your fingers do the walking and see if they can.

You can find almost anything at the big Wheel Horse show 6/24 & 25 in Arendtsville PA.

HELLO, WHAT YOUR LOCATION? INSTALLING BEARINGS AND BRUSHES IS VERY EASY TO DO. IF THE ARMATURE NEEDS TURNED THEN A REBULDER WILL NEED TO DO THAT. THERE IS GOOD SHOP IN CENTRAL OHIO I USE, THANKS BOWTIE

Any shop that rebuilds starters can fix that generator. I know of two shops within 5 miles of my house in rural PA. Just ask around.

I will check around locally, and see what I come up with. Hopefully I can find a place locally to rebuild it. I did find a rebuild kit on Ebay, but I'm not sure how difficult it would be to install it myself.

My local shop said it could cost $200.00 to rebuild this starter/generator, so I thought I'd give it a crack myself. I got a chance to pull this off the tractor, and open it up. The starter generator comes apart pretty easy, and I was able to determine that a bearing has gone bad. I am going to go to my local shop and see if they have the bearing in stock. Hopefully this will fix it!!

Call Henry's Electrical in Feasterville. He has been around forever and is very good with the older stuff. And it is only a 30 min drive. Most auto parts stores can also get the bearings for you. Also welcome to Redsquare. It is nice to know someone else from Bucks County.

Well I just got done installing the new bearing, and put it all back together. I installed it on my 702, and it is working like a charm. I guess the true test will be when I take it out to cut my lawn this weekend, but it starts the engine, and it shows that it is charging on the volt gauge.

Stevasaurus...I'm sorry I didn't see you post till now, and it is all back together and installed on my tractor. I've never rebuit or even seen the inside of a starter before...and I gotta say it's not too hard of a job. Mark...thanks for the entertaining video. I think the little drilled spots he shows at the start is to balance the armature. Glad you got yours up an running. :hide:

Good video and Steely Dan's "Can't Buy A Thrill" Soundtrack in the background! Kinda brought tears to my eyes. I have a noisy generator and I'm thinking now about cracking it open as opposed to taking it to our local automotive electrical shop.
