Gates Cross Reference for 268H with 48" Deck

Recommended Posts

wh5208speed

I have a friend who is looking to replace his belt on the mower deck (one that goes on the spindes) of his 268-H. He has a 48" deck and the Toro # is 92-6958. I am looking for the gates cross reference # if anyone knows it. Just trying to help him not spend $80 for one at the dealership.

Thanks,

Thad (Ohio)

Here's a couple of handy sites. The first one if you put the Toro/Wheel Horse number in, you can cross it to Gates or NAPA:

http://www.gates.com/part_interchange/inde...ocation_id=3286

This site tells the belt size by Wheel Horse part number:

I thought 5/8" was a bit big for a deck spindle belt on a lawn tractor, but I did not want to say for sure, I've been wrong before.

Well then I just called My Gates Bud and Gates Does Not Make A Kevlar in that size But a reg style Gates a 142" belt is $22.00 Bucks I caled toro and that belt is $77.00 my Cost. I can get a Kevlar by another mfg for $25.00 bucks. Well live and learn Why dont Toro Call it what It Is 4L1420 And Make it for standard parts than trying to slip a guy the Green Weenie! :) Thanks MCWH for the fine instruction. hi my name is trevor. I just had my toro wheel horse given to me by my dad. model 72086 (268H) I have fully replace the fuel system including all fuel  lines, fuel injector solenoid, fuel pump, carburetor rebuilt kit, and new spark plugs, and new battery. it runs and drives great, but while I was cutting the belt snapped! I have seen the conversation you guy were having about finding that mystic belt. lol. I have had the hardest time finding it and finding the best price. the best I found was $40 on ebay, which isn't bad, but I wanting to know how and where to get that gates belt for $22 and that Kevlar belt for $25 that horse fixer was talking about. my belt part number is the 92-6958. the actual size is 1/2x142. is there a phone number I can call them? I've never heard of gates until now. and I've never seen a retail store either. even if I have to order over the phone is fine.

Try an Industrial Power Transmission dealer such as Motion Industries or Applied Industrial.  Check the yellow pages(internet) more then likely you will have one within 20 minutes drive.   You will find that most of these places employ very knowledgeable help and will find you what you are looking for.  Stay away from belts marked HVAC as the power requirements for these applications are much different then for a garden tractor.

HVAC belts are designed to be run in applications where the load is constant and the routing of the belt is fairly simple i.e. from motor to driven pulley and back.  Garden Tractor applications require constantly changing loads and complex pulley arrangements such as back bending around idlers and powering multiple pullies and also clutching applications.  This is why they are Kevlar or cloth coated it keeps the belt from flying apart and cuts down on abrasion damage from miss-aligned pullies also it allows for the belt to slide when the clutch is disengaged on the driven pulley.

The 92-6958 belt in the Wheel Horse belt charts is actually 1/2" x 142.7".

This belt replaced 79-5280.
