312-8 Mule Drive

Recommended Posts

kburton66

I have to get a mule drive for a 312-8 (year ? SN 2112K805 30713). My 86 year old mother-in-law needs her Wheel Horse running. She can't handle the hydro static on her almost new Cub Cadet; "I need to shift" she says. There is one on ebay click here for the eBay auction right now but I'd like to get one before the grass needs mowing again.

I need the belts also. If anyone has one or can let me know of a source to buy retail please let me know.

This is my first encounter with a WH. It looks like a very nice little tractor.

Location: SE Indiana near Louisville

Thanks,

Keith

Keith, Welcome to RedSquare A Toro dealer should be able to get you the belts, you'll need the model number of the mower deck, not the tractor, to get the proper belts. If you can't find the model of the deck, post a picture of it here and we can help out I'm sure. If there isn't a Toro dealer there are some non-Toro cross references which Napa or other small engine shops can use to get you a belt.

For the front drive, eBay is your best bet, unless a member here happens to have one. Also, check the links sticky, there is a Yahoo group for Wheel Horse Classifieds, you can post a message there as well.

Hi, Keith, and  !!!!

Your tractor is a 1988. Mine's a 1989 312-8, and yes, they are phenomenal tractors! Much better built than most other brands - simple, rugged, and very dependable. Also, parts are still quite available for these models.

As already posted, you will need the deck model number to get the right belts. Once you've got that number, you can go to https://lookup3.toro.com/partdex/index.cfm?xCaller=Toro, then click on "Model search" and enter the model number in the window. That will take you to diagrams and parts lists for the deck (same procedure for the tractor model number if you need those parts).

I've had very good luck getting belts and parts through Jack's Small Engines at http://www.jackssmallengines.com/searchdb2.cfm

Great prices, delivery and service! There are others, I'm sure.

That mule drive on eBay looks pretty good, but I'd check with one of the more experienced fellows here to see if it would fit your tractor?

Good luck - that tractor is worth whatever you need to put into it! And again, :WRS:

One more thing, there are 2 mule drives for these tractors, one for the 37" side discharge deck and one for the rest. If you have the 37" SD you will need the front drives for that one. You can easily tell the 37" since it has 2 blades not 3. Oh, btw the tractor is a 1988

Coach, correct me if I'm wrong, but can't any of the "regular" mule drives be "converted" for the 37" SD deck by replacing the flat idler pulley with a twin to the vee-pulley?

TT, your thoughts?

Exactly correct, Deereman. :WRS:

The outer flat idler pulley can be swapped to a "V" idler and the tensioner will then work with the 37" SD deck. (and the "infamous" P/N 111178 6-sided belt  )

Thanks, TT!

Now I'm going to balance that brief flash of brilliance on my part with an equal or greater dose of :imstupid: !!!!!

I took my mule drive completely apart to clean the parts and repaint it. When I did the tear-down I forgot to take note of the order the spacers go back on the shaft. One is just a little wider than the other. Can you give me the order they go back on and in relation to the pulleys?

Thanks!

You only need to change the outer pulley to a flat idler. (see my post about 3 above yours - but reverse it. )

Thanks for all your replies.

I bought the pully assembly on ebay for $52 with shipping. A new one priced out at $225.

Thanks to the WH forum member who offered to sell me one. I replied to the email and I don't if it got through so I had to act on this one on ebay.

I'll try to attach a photo of the wear on the shaft. Note the wear profile on the worn area . The hardened bearing race on the pully shows hardly any wear.
