Carb Settings - Need Help!!!

Does anyone know - what is the proper settings on the carb for the B&S 5 3/4 hp motor. The motor is from an 1958 Original Panzer t-60. How many turns of setting screws??? Help!

Briggs and Stratton made many carburetor types on their early small engines (Vacu-Jet, Pulsa-Jet, one piece and two piece Flo-Jets). The number of turns to start with depends entirely on which carburetor is installed on your engine. What model number engine are you working on. A picture of your carburetor would be of great help. The tuning process is the same though.

WARNING: When closing the needle valves to find the "seat", go very slowly and do it by hand if possible. Closing the valves too tightly could damage the valve or the valve seats. Once you find the "seat", open the valves the number of turns specified below.

GENERALLY SPEAKING:

1. Open the Needle Valve 2-1/2 turns and open the Idle Valve 1-1/2 turns. (If the Needle Valve is in the bottom of the fuel bowl, then open both Valves 1-1/8 turns, if carburetor type is unknown open both 1-1/2 turns).

2. Start and warm the engine for 5 minutes.

3. Go to full throttle and close the needle valve very slowly until the governor arm begins to "hunt" (moves back and forth). You will also hear the engine begin to sound rough.

5. Open the needle valve very slowly, counting the number of turns as you do so, until the governor arm steadies and then begins to "hunt" again.

6. Close the needle valve 1/2 the number of turns counted.

7. Perform the same process for the Idle Valve as done for the Needle Valve.

8. Now check the engine from Idle to Full Throttle. You are looking to achieve a smooth transition. If the engine sags as it goes from idle to full throttle, open the Idle Valve 1/16 to 1/8 of a turn and try again. If it gets worse, go the other way the same amount.
