C series and B series

Recommended Posts

papaglide

I was looking at the attachments available for my B 80 when new and noticed that they weren't really any different than what was available for the C series tractors.

Now I am trying to figure out what the difference between the 2 series are and I can't really find any info. I was under the assumption that the C's were more heavy duty than the B's but my B seems pretty strong so I am kind of confused.

Can anyone help me with this? Thanks.

well i'm learning the differences too. i have a c-81

from what i see the c-81 has a 3 speed with reverse and a high-low transmission and gas tank under the seat. mine has a cigarette lighter too.

i think yours is just a 3 speed with reverse and gas tank under the hood.

i'm sure others will chime in with other things i don't know about yet lol but i'm learning.

For the most part the horizontal shaft B's are the same tractor as a C early ones are only 3 speeds, the early hydros used 1" axles, and the early B's had a shorter frame, I think the B was sold as a economy machine, now not all B's are horizontal shaft, many are vert shaft mowers the B60, B80 and B100 are horizontal shaft.

Thanks guys. So the frames on both are the same? Like same gauge steel and what not?

What do you think made them an economy tractor? Just the lower horsepower and 4 speed rear end?

Would the B80 be able to pull a 10" moldboard plow?

I am just trying to learn as much about my tractor as I can.

that really depends on your soil and if your breaking sod I have had trouble pulling my plow with a c-175 hydro through sandy ground busting sod, i did have to break roots though most of the problems I had were keeping it strait. loose soil would not be much of a problem though

I think the main difference between B and C Series is Horse Power, most of the C's came with bigger engines. The C's also came standard with lights, and larger rear tires.

With the same size engines on B and C Series the only difference may be lights.

I have a commando 800 witch for the most part is a B 80, I also have a C161 twin. Now I know the engines are way different but the the size of my C is bigger than the commando wheel base is longer and it sits higher and is much heavier than the commando. It also has the bigger axles. :hide:

So the main differences are iso mounts for the engine and an 8 speed rear end?

yes my c-81 has the cradle and rubber iso mounts too.

i think it's just minor differences between the c-81 and your b model.

Only the C series from 1978 to present were rubber mounted, from 1974 up to 1978 the engines were bolted right to the frame. the B series frames are shorter, they used 1" axles and the C's used 1 1/8" axles. B's had smaller back tires, no headlights (unless added) also some B's i have seen did not have the tool box under the fenders. The B series is a very capable tractor. I plowed my garden for years with a C-81 and broke lots of sod with it also so i would say a B-80 should have no problem. you may need to add weights to the tires tho.

No the b60, 80 and 100 were all available with 8 speeds. Only the b80 had a 3 speed according to my research. I know my my b60 is a 8 speed and one of my favorite tractor!! :hide:
