kj4kicks 154 #1 Posted May 29, 2008 Hi guys, In the lastest installment of "How the garage turns (red) " , I was thinking about using the engine from the old boat seat Electro as a temporary on Karl's old C-120 (guess it will always be called that now). Runs like a champ ! After picking TT's brain on chat last night (or was that 2 or 3 days ago?) , the ignition issue came up. After further research, they both have points ignition systems now, but the rectifiers and ignition switches are different. Probably some of the wiring, also. So now I'm thinking I will just leave this one with it's original engine, and focus on getting it ready for the show. Still plenty of time for blasting and painting! The C-120 may go, but it will probably just be a rolling chassis, unless somebody has a 12hp Kohler to loan out for the weekend! OK, here are the pics I know you will ask for:
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #2 Posted May 29, 2008 Very interesting...... Can you post the spec # off of that engine please?
kj4kicks 154 #3 Posted May 29, 2008 Serial # is D009331 Spec # is 47147 B OK, Mr. Wizard, show me what you got !
Kelly 1,033 #4 Posted May 29, 2008 I like the old Electros, I'd restore that one, looks to be in good shape.
DMESS 24 #5 Posted May 29, 2008 Eldon, Spec # is the same as the 68' I have but it doesn't have the external coil like yours. Was the rectumflier on there too?
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #6 Posted May 29, 2008 Serial # is D009331 Spec # is 47147 B OK, Mr. Wizard, show me what you got ! I don't have much - other than that is the correct engine (or at least the tag) for a 1968 C/E-12. Too bad I can't see the stator. If you really want to put that on the C-120, you should only have to switch the plastic plug on the R/R. The wire ends have the spring lock terminals and you can switch them around easily. That should be the only difference. (3 terminals in a row vs. the "L" shaped pattern) You just have to make sure the 2 stator leads go to the terminals marked "A.C." and the wire to the "R" terminal on the ignition switch is on the "B+" terminal of the R/R. (use the E-12 R/R)
kj4kicks 154 #7 Posted May 29, 2008 Eldon, Spec # is the same as the 68' I have but it doesn't have the external coil like yours. Was the rectumflier on there too? The rectum fryer was mounted to the dash tower. I just left it attached to the two wires going to the stator. Don't worry Kelly, this one is getting restored. It's way to nice to part out, I was just shooting for a loaner engine for the 120.
nylyon-(Admin) 7,882 #8 Posted May 29, 2008 Eldon, if it's just for the show, you can hook it up without the rectumflyer and use a toggle switch for the ignition (maybe the one for the lights? It won't charge the battery, but it should work fine. Just a thought
kj4kicks 154 #9 Posted May 29, 2008 If you really want to put that on the C-120, you should only have to switch the plastic plug on the R/R. (use the E-12 R/R) Plastic plug.... LOL ! Funny man ! This thing (I think) was re-wired one wire at a time ! There are no plastic plug ends anywhere except the lights. The ignition switch is the scary part. It's one of those with the 2 "on" positions. Some or the terminals are 1/4" spade, some are screw-on. Yikes, I say ! BTW, did you notice the blue wire off the switch ? They had it snug against the steering column, and it's rubbed through to the copper. Guess that's why the lights didn't work! TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #10 Posted May 29, 2008 That's the correct switch for the older tractors that didn't use starter solenoids. (the battery cable and starter cable once hooked directly to the ignition switch) The wiring on the C-120 is still OK, isn't it? That's the R/R plug I was referring to. You just need to pull the one wire that goes to the ignition switch out of that plug - the other two will come from the "new" engine's stator.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,610 #11 Posted May 29, 2008 After reading this thread and another one, I wonder how many different ways can we spell "rectifier"?
nylyon-(Admin) 7,882 #12 Posted May 29, 2008 I think the creativity is astounding.
kj4kicks 154 #13 Posted May 29, 2008 After reading this thread and another one, I wonder how many different ways can we spell "rectifier"? Don't worry T-MO, I really do know how to spell it. I just call them rectum fryer because it really burns my a$$ when I have to buy one !
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,610 #14 Posted May 29, 2008 I hear ya, Eldon. But I was beginning to wonder if I KNEW how to spell it.
