green gumby

I just bought a red machine off Craigslist and I would like to know what it is, I'm a green machine guy but when I saw this I didn't think I could or should pass it up, not sure yet if I keep it or pass it on. Thanksth_P1080372Small.jpg

1961 551

(click the picture and it gets bigger)

Now you can clearly see the Lauson engine, strap steel hoodstand and key-type ignition switch. (a 401 would have a toggle switch) :hide:

I agree that I now own a '61 401, not use to this sight yet, I normally look around a little more before asking questions- the answers are usually already there. Still not sold on keeping it as I am currently restoring 2 green machines. It seems fairly complete, minus the belt guard. I'm amassed it still has the serial number on that sticky tag, I'd have bet that would have fallen off back in the '70s- the green tractors had a brass tag riveted on. It came with another tranny with a rectangular seat on it. Decisions, decisions. Thanks all.

Yes a 501, how rare/ common are these? Over on the Green side we have a data base with serial numbers and a count of the different models.

They arent super rare :WRS: but there getting there, finding one that is straight with all the groceries. They were the last of the nutroasters as in the same year the 701 was born with the first front mount engine. Being its the last of the nutroasters thats kinda neat in itself. :hide:

:hide: I thank you all for the replies, still not sure of my next move with this tractor but it's currently found its way into the pole barn with my green machines. I suppose it and my green "66 110H would look good together in my front yard with carts behind them, thanks again, Dale
