Tire Sizes for a 520

Recommended Posts

Raider12

I need to buy new rubber all the way around for my 520H. So Im thinking maybe a little taller tire for all four corners. Iv just begun a "ground" up resotration. And no time like the present to make the change if Im going to. If I were to install a pair 26x12 on 12 on the rear. (And a increase tire size for the front as welll.)I figure I may have to raise the seat pan. But what issues do you think I may run into for the 48" mower deck? Any one try this? Im really liking the Carlisle HD Field Trax tire.

I will host photos of the restore later.

Here are a couple of links that may help.

Thank you, Iv been looking for those links for days. I must be doing something wrong when I complete a search? :hide:

What about the idea of using the mower deck with the wider tires? Anyone done this?

I'm not 100% on the deck issue. Hopefully Kelly will chime in. I asked him before about larger tires and he mentioned deck clearance. I can't remember exactly what he said now :hide:

i picked up a set of 26x12x12 off a Toro grounds keeper or whatever they are called, the rims were 10" but wouldn't come close to fitting on the 520. B/S was off, and hit the fender.

But after seeing Kelly's 520 with the 26" ags and tri ribs, I might have to make a set or look for another set. Would be great when I get the loader on there...

Cut the centers loose and weld them where you want them. :hide:

I sold them to a buddy for his J/D 425. I can find a lot of 12" 5 lug rims, just none are wide. I'm gonna hit a couple yards tomorrow and snag a couple sets. I need some for the C-141 I picked up, has one WH rim on one side, and some oddball on the other. It's a one piece wheel, dunno what it's off.

Can sorta see it here...

That is a WH rim, just not common they used them in the mid to late 70's, I have had a few sets, they all came on C-xx1 models like yours.

As for the wheels on my 520, I have no idea what they came off I picked them up at a tractor salvage yard, for $50 I cut the centers out and moved them back and welded them in, I also put the valve stems on the back.

I might just widen a set. I can get the metal for free, and probly get it bent to match the rim diameter for free as well. Need to do some practice welding...

Also Kelly, do you have a wright up or anymore info/pics on using the hubs/spindles up front?? I want to do that to mine as well.

Kelly, how did you cut the centers out? I would like to do this with a pair of rims i have but am not sure what the best way to approach it would be.

If you look real close those wheel that Kelly move the centers, they were riveted in.

No the centers were welded in, I used a die grinder and ground the spot welds out on the centers till I could use a punch and break the center loose, I just did another set last week, but I didn't care about the wheel shell, so I drilled the welds out.

The front hubs will only work on a 520 forward swept axle, they are just trailer hubs for a 1" spindle it's a bolt on, then buy wheels with the correct offset and how ever wide you want them.

Kelly, can you still use a 48 mower deck with the 26x12 tires?

I have the 520 with the swept front axle. I was looking at hubs on the net, some have a spindle that needs to be bolted/welded on. I was thinking if I get one for a 1" spindle, then should fit on the stock spindle?? I haven't took a wheel off the front yet, so dunno what it looks like.

I have no idea if a deck will fit on it? I kinda doubt it, I mow with a JD, as for the hubs, I used trailer hubs for a 1" axle, and they fit on the stock spindles, just be sure to check the suggested spindle length, to the 520 spindles, I got used hubs from the junk yard and it was a 5 min. swap.

You mentioned you were interested in putting on the 26x12-12 HD field track by Carlisle.....Did you know they make the 23x10.50-12 verison that would avoid your clearance issues?

Yes, I was aware that this size tire was available. I was hoping to go at least one size bigger than stock.

Thad might have typed the wrong size weren't those 24-12-12? Either way the 24-12-12 would be one size bigger than stock.

Carlisle makes this HD Filed Trax in a 24x12x12 and a 26x12x12. Im may lean towards a tire that is almost the twin to this Field Trax and it's called a Carlisle "All Trail" This tire is made in a 25x10.5-12. This would be perfect for a match with a front tire of 18x8.5-10. This would only lift the whole tractor 1 inch over all. Here is a link to see both tires side by side.
