What size transmission bolts

It's been 3 years since I tore my 314-8 apart. I don't even know what bolts are which. But I welded a 1/4" plate to the frame at the transmission mount. So what size bolts will I now need? Yep, I welded it to the inside and NOT the outside!!

Thanks! Time to start getting this thing back together.

I would start with 3/8 16 thread grade 8, 1 1/2" long and go from there.

According to the parts list for the 1985 314-8, the standard bolts are 3/8-16 x 3/4".

I would be careful installing anything over 1" until you know how far the holes are drilled into the case, and if they go all the way through, what will they interfere with?

Butch, they do go all the way through into the case....ask me how I know. :)

Thanks Steve! I've beern waiting for someone to add 3/4" and 1/4" for me!! :disgust: Did ya figure in lock washers or they don't use lock washers? :) :hide:

Lock washers on the top two bolts, none on the bottom two. Don't ask me why. :hide:

I did notice the hole goes into the crankcase on one of the bolts. I'm waiting for Duff to come clean on what he did. I was out looking at my pile of unpainted parts and nuts and bolts and wonder if I can ever get this thing back together.

Well....didn't hit nawthin'......just pulled the bolts out to replace them with S/S (which I've been doing on all my rebuilds), one at a time to avoid having take the tranny off the tractor. Didn't drain the oil before I started this little project and when I got to the first of the bottom bolts I got called away just after I'd pulled the bolt. Working fast and didn't pay attention to the seepage which quickly turned into full blown drainage. Came back to find about a quart of 90 weight on the shop floor. :) Fortunately it was cold and it hadn't spread too much but a mess nonetheless. :disgust:

Yuppers....won't make that mistake again!

Don't know the model number, Bob, or even if it's original to the tractor. :WRS: The machine came out of a junkyard and was already in pieces when I got it. It had an eight speed tranny on a frame with a Kohler M12 which should make it a 312-8, but I also noticed (and was very lucky to discover) that the engine had been completely rebuilt just before being junked. Somebody almost let a perfectly good M12 go to scrap -and that would have been a waste! All I had to do was rebuild the carb and clean off a ton of dirt and cobwebs and it 's the best running engine I own!

All that said, this was two years ago and maybe I am mistaking the top and bottom bolt as the one that leaked. Now I'm trying to tremember for sure......but I sure do remember the oil puddle!!!!!

My holes end also. But I did tip the sucker on it's side and lost some fluid!! :hide:

The bolts were very hard to get in with that added plate for some reason. The holes were rebored in their identical spots or looked as though they were. I may have stripped one or two although they did tighten up with an air impact wrench and a ratchet. Used the air impact to get them to go and used the ratchet to tighten them up. The holes were not perfectly aligned so that is what worried me about the stripping. They were very hard going in. But nothing stripped out........yet!!

Butch...the book says to take 2 3/8" bolts and cut the heads off and round the ends...screw them into diagonal holes to use to line up the trans. This works great and makes it a ton easier to get the bolts started. :hide:

You could make that horse the WHCC raffle tractor this year, and I'll put it together for ya. :beer::disgust::hide::)

Duff...the fluid in the trans isn't full enough to leak out the top bolts...I'll bet it leaked out the hole we use to mess with the detente balls and spring. :WRS:
