salty57 2 #1 Posted May 17, 2011 I have a partially restored RJ 58/59, for Christmas my wife bought me an RJ parts tractor with all the parts I was missing. It included a mower deck in fair condition with all the hardware. Lift cable is cherry, but the tractor is rough from sitting under a leaking shed for seven years. All original except it had a H55 engine. My question is the parts tractor has cotter pins to retain the front wheels, while mine has the grove machined for C-clips/snap rings. Also mine has a notch in the back side of the left vertical steering support, and the steering link is different on the parts tractor. Mine also has a 59 date cast in the transmission case and I have yet to find a date code on the parts tractor. Any ideas?
puddlejumper 67 #2 Posted May 17, 2011 Need some pictures But I believe your parts tractor is a suburban and not a RJ

VinsRJ 723 #4 Posted May 17, 2011 Here's a couple observations from your description: 1) As you stated the H55 is incorrect for an RJ. 2) The cotter pins is not original for a RJ, all had snap rings retaining the front wheels. 3) A RJ would not have a "notch" on the hood support and the original steering link would be made out of round bar. 4) RJ58s had 1959 date code tranny cases, the RJ58 model bled into the 1959 model year. Early production 1958 RJ58s had no cast in date codes. :hide:
salty57 2 #5 Posted May 17, 2011 Did the RJ 35 or pre 58's use cotter pins, there is no groove machined in these and they don't appear to have been modified.
VinsRJ 723 #6 Posted May 18, 2011 RJ35s had snap rings.
MikesRJ 558 #7 Posted May 18, 2011 Post some pic's of the two tractors and we can better answer your questions. Also, here's the manual for the RJ-58: http://www.mywheelhorse.com/graphics/file/..._1958_RJ-58.pdf
